How the Gantt Chart Maker works

This Gantt chart maker lays tasks out on a calendar. A Gantt chart lays project tasks out as bars on a calendar, so you can see what runs in parallel, where one task waits for another and when the whole thing finishes. Project tools make you click through a form for every task. Here you paste rows of task, start and end, and the page draws the bars to scale with a date axis, week or month grid, colour groups, percent complete shading and a line for today, then lets you download SVG or PNG. Nothing is uploaded.

Gantt chart maker: writing the rows

The first line is a header and each line after it is one task: name, start date, end date. Dates are written as 2025-01-06 or 6 Jan 2025; the end can also be a plain number of days, so "Research,2025-01-06,10" runs for ten days. Two more columns are optional: a group name, which colours the bar and adds a legend, and a percent done, which shades the bar to that fraction. Tasks are drawn in the order you paste them, so put them in the order you want to read. Tabs work in place of commas, so a range copied from a spreadsheet pastes straight in.

Reading the chart

The date axis runs along the top and each task has a row with its name on the left. A bar runs from its start to its end; when a percent column is present the bar is pale and the done part is solid, so a glance shows how far along each task is. Duration labels print the length in days and the percent after each bar. The grid marks Mondays or the first of each month to make it easy to read a bar against the calendar, and a dashed red line marks today when today falls inside the chart's range.

Groups and phases

Use the group column for phases such as Discovery, Design, Build and Launch. Each group gets a palette colour and appears in the legend, so the chart reads as a sequence of phases without any extra drawing. Leave the column blank on rows that do not belong to a phase; they use the first palette colour.

Keeping it tidy

Long task names are shortened with an ellipsis and shown in full when hovered, along with the dates, group and progress; that text is kept in the SVG. A chart with many tasks grows taller rather than squeezing rows. If the axis is crowded, switch the grid to Months or shorten the range by splitting the project into separate charts per phase.

Exporting

Download SVG gives a vector file with task names as editable text, ready for Inkscape, Illustrator or Figma, or for dropping into a plan document. Download PNG renders at one, two or three times the preview width. Copy SVG puts the markup on the clipboard. Everything is drawn in your browser; the task list never leaves your machine.

FAQ

Can I give a duration instead of an end date?

Yes. Put a whole number in the end column and it is read as a number of days from the start, so "Build,2025-02-10,30" ends thirty days later. Mixing the two forms across rows is fine; each row is read on its own.

How do I show progress?

Add a fifth column with a percentage, with or without the percent sign. The bar is drawn pale with the completed part in solid colour, the label after the bar shows the figure, and the stats report the average across tasks that have one.

Can I show dependencies with arrows?

Not on this chart; it draws the bars from the dates you give and leaves the ordering to you. List tasks in the order they depend on each other and use the grid to line up a finish with the next start. A separate flowchart tool suits a dependency diagram better.

Why is there no today line?

The line is drawn only when today falls between the earliest start and latest end in the list, so a chart of a past or future project has none. Set the Today line option to Hide if you want it off even for a current project.
