How the GIF To PNG works

Drop a GIF into this GIF to PNG converter to get a PNG or JPG of its first frame, or choose All frames to download every frame of an animation as numbered images in one ZIP. The GIF is decoded by JavaScript in this tab, so nothing is uploaded.

How the GIF to PNG conversion works

The GIF is read block by block and each frame is decoded from its LZW data. Animated GIFs usually store only the part of each frame that changed, so every frame is drawn over the ones before it, following the GIF's disposal rules, to give the full picture you would see in a viewer. That picture is then saved in the format you chose.

PNG or JPG

Feature PNG JPG
Quality Lossless, an exact copy Slightly lossy at quality 92
Transparency Kept Filled with white
Best for Logos, pixel art, screenshots Photos and smooth gradients
File size Small for flat colours Smaller for photographic frames

All frames in a ZIP

With All frames chosen, each frame is saved as its own file, named after the GIF with a zero-padded frame number so the files sort in order. The ZIP stores them without further compression, since PNG and JPG are already compressed. To pick a single frame from the middle of an animation, use the GIF frame extractor.

FAQ

Why is my PNG bigger than the GIF?

A GIF holds at most 256 colours and compresses runs of identical pixels well, and an animated GIF reuses unchanged areas between frames. The PNG stores one full frame with no such tricks, so a large photographic GIF frame can come out bigger. JPG is usually smaller.

Does the PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. Pixels that are transparent in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG. JPG has no transparency, so those areas are filled with white instead. Choose PNG if you need to place the image on a coloured background later.

How do I turn the frames back into an animation?

Use the GIF to video converter to make an MP4 or WebM from the original GIF, or load the numbered PNG files into an editor such as GIMP, which can open them as layers and export an animated GIF or WebP again.

Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?

No. The GIF is decoded and re-encoded entirely in your browser, and the PNG, JPG or ZIP is created on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab clears the file.
