How the HEIC To WebP works

This HEIC to WebP converter turns a photo from an iPhone or iPad into a WebP, the format most websites, blogs and web apps prefer for photos. Pick a quality, cap the width if the photo is going on a web page, and download. The HEIC decoder is fetched on demand and runs in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded.

Why convert HEIC to WebP

HEIC is a great format for storing photos on a phone, but no browser other than Safari can show it, and most website builders, CMS uploaders and image hosts reject it. WebP is the opposite: every current browser displays it, and it is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than a JPG of the same visible quality. If the photo is headed for a web page, WebP is the natural target.

How the HEIC to WebP converter works

HEIC wraps an image encoded with HEVC, the codec used for 4K video. Browsers do not include an HEVC decoder, so the page loads the open-source libheif library the first time you drop a file. It decodes the primary image to pixels, the tool scales it if you set a maximum width, and your browser's own encoder saves the result as WebP at the quality you picked.

Choosing the quality and width

Typical sizes for a 12 megapixel iPhone photo converted to WebP

Setting Typical size Good for
Quality 90, full size 2–3 MB Archive copy, large prints from the web
Quality 80, full size 1–1.5 MB Full-screen galleries
Quality 80, 2000 px wide 300–500 kB Blog posts and product pages
Quality 75, 1200 px wide 100–200 kB Content images, social previews

For a web page, the width matters more than the quality. A photo is rarely shown wider than 2000 pixels, and halving the width cuts the file to roughly a quarter.

What is not carried over

EXIF data, including GPS location, is not copied, because the image is rebuilt from decoded pixels; that is usually what you want before publishing. Live Photo motion, depth maps and burst frames are dropped and only the primary still is converted. 10-bit HDR photos are tone-mapped to standard 8-bit colour.

FAQ

Which browsers can save WebP?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and other Chromium browsers all encode WebP. Safari displays WebP but cannot save it from a canvas, so on an iPhone or Mac use Chrome or Firefox for this tool, or pick the HEIC to JPG converter instead.

Is WebP better than JPG for iPhone photos?

For the web, yes. WebP files are usually a quarter to a third smaller than JPGs that look the same, which makes pages load faster. JPG is still the safer choice for email attachments, print shops and older software that may not open WebP.

Does converting HEIC to WebP lose quality?

WebP at these settings is lossy, like JPG, so a little detail is discarded. At quality 80 or above the difference is very hard to see on screen. Use the HEIC to PNG converter if you need a lossless copy for editing.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The libheif decoder is downloaded to your browser and runs there, and the WebP is encoded by your browser too. The photo never leaves your device, which matters for personal pictures with location data.
