How the Image Sequence to Video works

This image sequence to video tool joins numbered still frames into one clip. Drop every frame at once, set the frame rate and press Render. Files are sorted in natural order, so frame 2 comes before frame 10, and the video is encoded in your browser without uploading anything.

Render engines, time-lapse cameras, animation apps and scientific instruments all save their output as one image per frame. A folder of 240 PNGs is easy to inspect but useless to share; a video is one file that any phone or website plays.

How image sequence to video encoding works

Every image is decoded by your browser, drawn onto a canvas of the chosen size and handed to the encoder at an exact interval of one frame. At 24 fps each image is held for 41.7 milliseconds, so 240 frames make a 10-second clip. The encoder is MediaRecorder, which writes WebM in Chrome and Firefox and MP4 in Safari.

Frames 12 fps 24 fps 30 fps 60 fps
60 5 s 2.5 s 2 s 1 s
240 20 s 10 s 8 s 4 s
900 75 s 37.5 s 30 s 15 s

Frame order

Names are compared the way people count, not character by character. frame2.png sorts before frame10.png, which plain alphabetical order would get wrong. Zero-padded names such as 0001.png also sort correctly. The stats show the first and last name so you can confirm it.

Tips and pitfalls

Choose the frame rate the frames were made for. Animation drawn on twos is often 12 fps; renders are usually 24, 25 or 30. A wrong rate plays the motion too fast or slow, not choppy.

Mixed sizes. Frames that differ in size are each fitted into the output frame. Fill the frame crops to cover; Fit inside leaves bars in the background colour.

Encoding runs in real time. 900 frames at 30 fps take 30 seconds. Keep the tab visible.

Memory. Every frame is decoded at once. A few hundred 4K frames can exhaust a phone; on a laptop, thousands of 1080p frames are fine.

How to read the result

The stats list the frame count, the first and last file names in the order used, the clip length, the output size and the file size.

FAQ

How do I convert a PNG sequence to a video?

Select all the PNG files together, drag them onto the drop zone, set the frame rate the sequence was rendered at and press Render. The frames are sorted by number, encoded into a video and offered for download in a few seconds.

Why are my frames in the wrong order?

Check the first and last names in the stats. Natural sorting handles numbers anywhere in the name, but files from different folders or with different prefixes sort by prefix first. Rename them to a single pattern such as frame_0001.png.

What frame rate should I pick?

Use the rate the frames were created for. Film-style renders are usually 24 fps, video in Europe 25 fps, and screen or game captures 30 or 60 fps. Hand-drawn animation and time-lapses often look best between 8 and 15 fps.

Are my images uploaded to make the video?

No. Every frame is decoded and encoded by your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so unreleased renders and private photos never leave your device, and the tool keeps working offline.
