How the MOD to WAV Converter works

Drop one or more tracker modules here to convert MOD to WAV or MP3, along with XM, S3M, IT and about twenty rarer formats. Preview plays the first module with your settings; Export renders every module to its own 48 kHz stereo file, as a single download for one module or a zip for several. libopenmpt does the rendering inside this tab, so your files are never uploaded.

Why a module has to be rendered

A tracker module is not recorded audio. It is a set of short samples plus patterns that say which sample plays at which pitch on which channel, row by row, and a tracker engine mixes them into sound as the song plays. Phones, video editors, DAWs and most music players have no such engine, so a MOD or XM file has to be rendered once to WAV or MP3 before they can use it. This page runs libopenmpt, the playback engine of OpenMPT, compiled to WebAssembly, which renders the module exactly as the OpenMPT player would.

Output files

Every module renders at 48 kHz in stereo. Choose 16-bit WAV for editing and burning to CD, 24-bit WAV if you plan to process the audio further, or MP3 for sharing and phones. With several modules, each one is converted with the same settings and named after its source file, so song.xm becomes song.wav, and they are saved together in one zip file.

Typical output sizes for a three-minute module

Format Size
WAV 16-bit About 35 MB
WAV 24-bit About 52 MB
MP3 192 kbps About 4.3 MB
MP3 128 kbps About 2.9 MB

One file or a playlist

This converter keeps each module separate. To join several modules into one continuous track, use the MOD player, which renders a playlist and exports it as one file.

FAQ

Can I convert XM or IT files as well as MOD?

Yes. The converter reads every format libopenmpt supports, including FastTracker 2 XM, Impulse Tracker IT, Scream Tracker S3M, OpenMPT MPTM, MultiTracker MTM, OctaMED MED and packed MO3 and UMX files. Drop a mix of formats at once and each is converted to WAV or MP3 the same way.

Why is my WAV file so much longer than the song?

Some modules never end: their last pattern jumps back to the start, and libopenmpt stops once it detects the loop. If Times through is above 1, the song is rendered that many times in a row. Set it to 1 for a single pass, which is the length shown in the summary below the settings.

Will the WAV sound exactly like the original tracker?

Very close. libopenmpt is built to reproduce each tracker's playback quirks, from ProTracker effect handling to Impulse Tracker filters. The remaining differences come from interpolation and the output stage, so for an Amiga MOD turn on the Amiga resampler and set Interpolation to None for the most authentic sound.

Is there a size limit?

No upload limit, because nothing is uploaded. Each module is rendered in memory, so a ten-minute module makes a WAV of about 115 MB at 16-bit; very long batches are faster as MP3, which also keeps the zip small.
