How the Photo To Sketch works

This photo to pencil sketch online tool redraws a picture in graphite. Drop in a photo and see it redrawn as a soft graphite pencil sketch, a clean ink line drawing or a bold flat-colour cartoon. Two sliders set how much shading survives and how heavy the lines are, and the result downloads as a PNG at the original size. The image is converted on your device; nothing is uploaded.

Photo to pencil sketch online: what to know first

Each of the three styles is built from classic image-processing steps rather than a trained model, which is why the conversion is instant and works the same on any subject.

Pencil sketch uses the colour-dodge technique that digital artists use by hand. The photo is turned to greyscale, inverted, blurred, and the greyscale is divided by that blurred inverse. Flat areas come out near white, while anywhere the original changes tone the result darkens in proportion, which reads as graphite shading that follows the contours of the subject. Shading detail controls the blur radius: low values give a broad, smoky rendering with little texture, high values keep fine hair, fabric and skin texture. Line weight has no effect on this style.

Ink outline keeps only the edges. Each pixel is compared with the average of its neighbourhood and drawn black if it is darker than that average by a margin; everything else is left white. Line weight sets both the neighbourhood size and a smoothing pass before it, so a low value picks up fine hatching and noise, and a high value gives thick, confident strokes with the small stuff dropped. It suits colouring pages, stencils and tattoo flash.

Cartoon combines the ink outline with a flattened version of the colours. The photo is run through an edge-preserving smoothing filter several times, which wipes out texture while keeping the boundaries between regions sharp, then each colour channel is snapped to a small number of levels so the shading becomes flat bands like cel animation. The outline is laid on top in black. Shading detail here decides how many smoothing passes run and how many colour levels are kept: low for a poster-like look with a handful of tones, high for something closer to a painted illustration.

Very large images are scaled to 2400 pixels on the long side before conversion, and the filter sizes scale with the image so a phone snap and a full-resolution camera file look the same. For the sketch and outline styles the stats give the ink coverage, the share of the page that ends up dark, which is a quick way to judge whether the settings are too heavy for printing.

FAQ

Why is the pencil sketch almost blank?

The photo has large flat areas and the shading detail is low. Raise shading detail, or use a photo with more tonal variation. Strong side lighting sketches far better than flash.

Which style prints best?

Ink outline. It is pure black on white with no grey, so it prints cleanly and works as a colouring page or stencil. Aim for an ink coverage below about 15% in the stats.

Why does the cartoon style take longer?

It runs several passes of edge-preserving smoothing over the full image, which is heavier than the single blur the other styles use. Larger photos and higher shading detail take longer.

Can I control the colours in the cartoon?

Only through shading detail, which sets how many colour levels survive. For a specific palette, apply the cartoon and then remap colours in an image editor.
