How the Cartoon Photo Filter works

This cartoon photo filter turns a picture into a cartoon in a few seconds: it smooths skin, sky and walls into flat areas of colour, cuts the palette down to a handful of shades and draws bold ink outlines along the edges.

How to use the cartoon photo filter

Drop in a photo and wait a moment while the image library loads the first time. Outline weight picks thin, medium or bold ink lines. Colour levels sets how many shades each colour channel keeps, so low values give a flat comic look and high values keep more of the original. Smoothing passes irons out texture before the colours are reduced. Download the result when you are happy.

How the cartoon effect is made

The filter uses OpenCV, the open-source computer vision library, running in your browser. A bilateral filter smooths flat regions while keeping edges crisp, then each colour is rounded to a small number of levels. Separately, a blurred greyscale copy is run through an adaptive threshold to find the outlines, which are drawn in black over the flattened colours.

Tips for a cleaner cartoon

Photos with good light and clear subjects work best. Busy backgrounds such as foliage produce a lot of small outlines, so try Thin lines and more smoothing passes for those. Large photos are processed at up to 1,600 pixels on the long side to keep the filter quick.

Private by design

OpenCV runs locally and the photo is never uploaded.

FAQ

How do I turn a picture into a cartoon?

Drop the picture in and the filter does the rest. Adjust the outline weight and colour levels until the balance between flat colour and line work looks right, then download the cartoon as an image file.

Why does it take a moment the first time?

The filter loads the OpenCV image-processing library the first time you use it, which is a few megabytes. After that it stays loaded, so changing settings or trying another photo is much faster.

Why are there too many black lines?

Textured areas such as hair, grass and brick produce many small edges. Switch to Thin outlines and increase Smoothing passes, which flattens texture before outlines are found and leaves only the stronger edges.

Is this an AI cartoon filter?

No. It uses classic image-processing steps from OpenCV rather than a trained AI model, so it is fast, works offline once loaded and never sends your photo anywhere. The result is a stylised photo rather than a redrawn character.
