How the PSD To PNG works

Drop a Photoshop file into this PSD to PNG converter to save the flattened image as a PNG, with transparency kept. Choose the layer option to also get every layer as its own PNG in a ZIP. The PSD is read by the open-source ag-psd library in this tab, so nothing is uploaded.

How the PSD to PNG converter works

A PSD stores each layer separately and, when saved with Maximize Compatibility on, also a ready-made flattened copy of the whole image. The flattened image you download is that copy, exactly as Photoshop rendered it, including adjustment layers, blend modes and effects. The converter does not try to re-render the layers itself.

What is in the layer ZIP

Each layer becomes a PNG the size of the full canvas, placed where it sits in the document, so the files line up when you stack them in another editor. Layers inside groups are named with their group, and files are numbered from the bottom of the layer stack upwards.

What the layer files keep and what they lose

Kept Not applied
Pixels and transparency Blend modes
Position on the canvas Layer styles such as shadows
Hidden layers Adjustment layers
Group names Masks and opacity settings

Need a JPG or WebP?

PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, which suits design files. For a smaller photo, run the PNG through the image converter, which also reads PSD files directly and saves JPEG, WebP or AVIF.

FAQ

Why does my PSD say it has no flattened image?

Photoshop only saves the flattened copy when Maximize Compatibility is turned on, and some other apps never write one. Re-save the file in Photoshop with the option enabled under Preferences, File Handling, or export a PNG from the app that made it.

Does it work with PSB large documents?

No. PSB is Photoshop's large document format for files over 2 GB or 30,000 pixels wide, and browsers struggle to hold images that size in memory anyway. Save a smaller PSD copy in Photoshop first, or export the PNG directly from it.

Why do some layers come out empty?

Text, smart object, shape and adjustment layers may have no pixel data of their own stored in the file, or the pixels are only made when Photoshop renders them. Those layers are skipped, so the ZIP can hold fewer files than the Layers panel shows.

Is my PSD uploaded anywhere?

No. The PSD reader is downloaded from this site when you drop a file, and it runs entirely in your browser. The file and the PNGs never leave your device, and closing the tab clears everything.
