How the Social Media Image Resizer works
This social media image resizer turns any photo into the exact pixel size each platform wants. Pick Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, YouTube or Pinterest and the format, choose crop or pad, and download a JPG that uploads without being squashed or re-cropped. Nothing leaves your browser.
Every platform has its own shapes, and each one crops or compresses images that do not match. An off-size photo gets its edges cut in the feed, a cover photo loses the top of someone's head on mobile, or a thumbnail ends up with black bars. Uploading at the platform's own size avoids all of that and gives its compressor the best starting point.
Social media image resizer sizes
| Platform and format | Pixels | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Instagram portrait post | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Instagram / Facebook story, Reels, TikTok | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
| Facebook shared image and link preview | 1200 × 630 | 1.91:1 |
| Facebook page cover | 851 × 315 | about 2.7:1 |
| X post image | 1600 × 900 | 16:9 |
| X header | 1500 × 500 | 3:1 |
| LinkedIn post image | 1200 × 627 | 1.91:1 |
| LinkedIn personal banner | 1584 × 396 | 4:1 |
| YouTube thumbnail | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 |
| YouTube channel banner | 2560 × 1440 | 16:9 |
| Pinterest standard pin | 1000 × 1500 | 2:3 |
Platforms adjust these from time to time. They are the sizes each one documents for upload in 2026; when a platform says "at least", this tool uses the recommended size.
Crop to fill or fit with padding
Crop to fill scales the image until it covers the whole frame, then trims the overflow evenly from both sides or from top and bottom. Nothing is distorted and there are no bars, but the edges of a picture with a very different shape are lost. It suits photos where the subject is central.
Fit with padding scales the image until it just fits, so all of it shows, then fills the leftover space with the padding colour. Use it for logos, screenshots, charts, quotes and group photos where nothing may be cut. White suits most feeds; pick a colour from your brand or from the image itself for a cleaner look.
If you need to choose exactly which part stays, use the aspect-ratio cropper first to frame the shot at the right shape, then run it through here to set the final pixels.
Safe zones
Some formats are cropped again on certain screens even at the right size:
- Facebook cover: phones show only the middle 640 × 315 or so. Keep text and faces in the centre.
- YouTube channel banner: the safe area on every device is the central 1546 × 423 pixels. The rest shows only on TVs and large desktops.
- LinkedIn banner: your profile photo covers the lower left on desktop and much of the middle on mobile.
- Stories and Reels: the top 250 and bottom 340 pixels sit under the username, captions and buttons.
- Instagram grid: portrait posts show in the profile grid as a 3:4 centre crop.
Why JPG?
Every platform re-encodes uploads as JPEG or WebP whatever you send, and a large PNG often gets compressed harder to meet a size limit. A JPG at quality 90 at the exact size is the most predictable input. For a logo or text graphic that looks soft after upload, try the same image at twice the size; X and LinkedIn keep more detail from larger sources.
Tips and pitfalls
Small source images. Enlarging a 600-pixel photo to 1080 makes it soft. The tool warns when the source had to be scaled up. Use the largest original you have.
Text on images. Keep text at least 5% of the image height so it is readable on a phone, and away from the edges where platforms overlay buttons.
Same picture, several platforms. Run the image once for each preset. The file names include the pixel size so the downloads do not overwrite each other.
How to read the result
The stats show the source size, the output size and file size, and the fit mode. The preview is the exact framing that will be saved.
FAQ
What is the best image size for Instagram?
1080 × 1350 pixels, the 4:5 portrait format, takes up the most room in the feed. Square posts are 1080 × 1080 and stories and Reels are 1080 × 1920. Instagram scales larger uploads down to 1080 pixels wide.
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
1280 × 720 pixels, a 16:9 shape, under 2 MB. The JPG this tool makes at that size is normally 150 to 400 KB, well inside the limit.
Why does my Facebook cover look cropped on my phone?
Facebook shows the full 851 × 315 cover on desktop but crops the sides on phones. Keep important text and faces in the central area so they appear on both.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The resizing is done by your browser on your own device and the image is never sent to a server, so private and unreleased pictures stay with you.
