How the Add Border to Image works
Add border to image files without opening an editor: pick a thickness and colour, optionally add a mat of padding inside it, and download the framed picture. It works for print-style white borders, thin outlines on screenshots and bold colour frames.
How to add border to image files
Drop the image in and drag Border width. The border is drawn outside the picture, so nothing is cropped: a 20 px border on a 1080 × 1080 photo produces a 1120 × 1120 image. Pick any colour with the colour picker. The preview updates as you drag, and the download keeps the original format, so a JPG stays a JPG and a PNG stays a PNG.
Border plus padding
Padding adds a second band between the photo and the border, in its own colour. A thin dark border with a wide white padding gives the look of a mounted print; matching both colours simply makes one thicker border. Set the border to 0 to use padding on its own, for example to give a logo some breathing room on a white background.
Getting the thickness right
Borders are measured in real pixels, so the same number looks thinner on a large photo than on a small one. For a phone photo around 4000 px wide, a classic white print border is roughly 120 to 200 px. For a screenshot, 1 to 4 px gives a crisp outline that separates it from a white page.
Instagram and square frames
If you need a non-square photo to fit a square post without cropping, combine this with the aspect ratio tools: pad the short sides until the canvas is square. A border of equal width all round keeps the photo centred.
Private by design
The image is processed entirely in your browser and is never uploaded. Re-encoding from a canvas also drops EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location.
FAQ
Does adding a border crop my photo?
No. The border and padding are added around the outside, so the image grows by twice their combined width in each direction and every pixel of the original photo is kept.
How do I add a white border like a printed photo?
Set the border colour to white and drag the width until it looks right, or use a thin grey border with wide white padding to imitate a mounted print with an outline around the mat.
Can I add padding without a visible border?
Yes. Set Border width to 0 and use Padding with whatever colour you want. This is useful for giving a logo or product shot space on a plain background before uploading it.
Will the image keep its format and quality?
JPG, PNG and WebP keep their format; other types such as HEIC are saved as PNG. JPG and WebP are re-encoded at high quality, so the change in sharpness is not visible in normal use.
