How the Word Cloud Generator works

This word cloud generator sizes words by frequency. A word cloud sizes each word by how often it appears, so the themes of a speech, a set of survey answers, a page of reviews or a draft article show up at a glance. Paste the text, or a list of words with counts, and the page counts the words, drops the connecting words, packs the rest into a cloud and lets you download it as SVG or PNG. Nothing is uploaded.

Word cloud generator: two ways to enter words

Paste any block of prose and the page counts every word itself, ignoring case and stripping punctuation, so "Tools," and "tools" are the same word. Or paste one word per line followed by a comma, tab or colon and a number, such as design, 42, when you already have counts from a spreadsheet, a survey tool or an analytics export. Weighted lists are used exactly as given; common-word removal only applies to free text.

Common words

The, and, of, to and a hundred or so similar words dominate any English text and say nothing about its subject, so they are removed by default. Choose Keep all for a language other than English, for a list of product names that happens to include short words, or when you want the raw frequency picture. Single letters are always dropped.

Sizing and placement

The most frequent word is drawn largest and the rest scale down by the square root of their count, which keeps the middle of the range readable rather than letting one word crush the others. Words are placed from the centre outwards along a spiral, each one nudged until it finds a gap, so the biggest words sit in the middle and the cloud stays roughly oval. Max words caps how many are drawn; a lower number gives a bolder, simpler cloud. Words that cannot find room are skipped and the stats panel says how many were placed.

Orientation and case

Horizontal keeps every word upright and is the easiest to read. Mixed turns about a third of the words vertical at random for the classic tag-cloud look, and Every third vertical does the same in a fixed pattern so the result is the same each time. Case rewrites the words to lower or upper case; upper case gives a poster feel but takes more room, so fewer words may fit.

Exporting

Download SVG keeps the words as real text, so the file can be edited in Inkscape, Illustrator or Figma and every word stays searchable. Download PNG renders at one, two or three times the preview width for slides and documents. Hover a word to see its count.

FAQ

Why is a word I expect missing?

Either it was removed as a common word, it is a single letter, or the cloud ran out of room before reaching it. Raise Max words, switch to Horizontal, which packs more tightly, or choose Keep all if it is on the common-word list.

Can I combine words or phrases?

Not from free text; each word is counted on its own. For phrases, build a weighted list of phrase, count lines and paste that instead. Anything before the last comma is treated as the label, so multi-word labels work.

Does the cloud change each time?

No. The random orientation uses a fixed seed, so pasting the same text with the same settings always produces the same cloud, which matters when you need to reproduce a figure later.

Is the colour meaningful?

No. Colours cycle through the palette in frequency order purely for legibility, so words next to each other differ. Change the palette in the chart settings for a different look.
