How the Tip Calculator works

This tip calculator works out the tip on a bill at whatever percentage you choose, the total to pay and each person's share when a group splits it. Round each share up to a whole number to make paying easier, or round the total up, and the calculator shows what that does to the real tip percentage.

Tip calculator formula

The tip is the bill times the percentage divided by 100. Add it to the bill for the total, and divide by the number of people for each share:

Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100 Total = bill + tip Each share = total ÷ people

A quick mental check: 10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left. Double it for 20%, and add half of it for 15%.

Worked example: splitting four ways

A table of four has a bill of 120.00 and wants to tip 18%. The tip is 120 × 0.18 = 21.60, so the total is 141.60 and each share is 35.40. Rounding each share up to 36.00 gives a total of 144.00, a real tip of 24.00 or 20.0% of the bill.

Worked example: rounding the total

A bill of 64.50 at 15% gives a tip of 9.68 and a total of 74.18. Rounding the total up to 75.00 makes the tip 10.50, or 16.3%.

Quick answers

FAQ

How much should I tip?

Customs differ a lot by country and by service. In the United States 15 to 20% is usual at a sit-down restaurant, while in Australia, the UK and much of Europe a tip is optional or a service charge is already on the bill. Check the bill for a service charge before adding a tip.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, since tax is not part of the service. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill; the difference is small on most meals.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

This calculator splits the total evenly. For an uneven split, work out each person's items, then apply the same tip percentage to each subtotal. Then add the shares.
