How the Days Until Easter works
See how many days until Easter Sunday from today or any date you choose. Easter moves every year, so the page works out the date with the Gregorian computus first, then counts down live, and gives the weeks and days left.
How the days until Easter are counted
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March. The calculator uses the standard computus formula, which turns the year into that date with whole-number arithmetic, then subtracts the date you count from.
Worked examples
For example, from 30 September 2026 there are 179 days until Easter Sunday 2027, which falls on 28 March. As a second example, from 1 January 2027 the count is 86 days.
Why Easter moves
Because it follows the moon, Western Easter can fall on any date from 22 March to 25 April. Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar for the same rule, so their Easter is often one or more weeks later.

FAQ
When is Easter this year?
Easter Sunday falls between 22 March and 25 April. In 2026 it was on 5 April, and in 2027 it is on 28 March. The calculator shows the next Easter from whatever date you count from.
Why does Easter change date every year?
Easter is set by the moon: it is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March. Lunar months do not line up with calendar months, so the date shifts each year.
Does this cover Orthodox Easter?
No. The countdown uses the Western Gregorian computus followed by Catholic and Protestant churches. Orthodox Easter uses the Julian calendar, and it is often later, though the two sometimes fall on the same Sunday.
