How the days until Mother's Day are counted
In the UK and Ireland, Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is three weeks before Easter Sunday, so the formula starts from the date of Easter. Elsewhere it is simply the second Sunday of May. The calculator then subtracts the date you count from.
Worked examples
For example, from 30 September 2026 there are 158 days until Mothering Sunday on 7 March 2027. As a second example, from the same date there are 221 days until the US Mother's Day on 9 May 2027.
Two different days
Mothering Sunday grew from a church tradition of visiting your mother church in Lent. The May date comes from Anna Jarvis's campaign in the United States, which made it a national observance in 1914.

FAQ
When is Mother's Day in the UK?
Mothering Sunday is three weeks before Easter Sunday, so it falls between 1 March and 4 April. In 2026 it was on 15 March, and in 2027 it is on 7 March. Ireland uses the same date.
When is Mother's Day in the US?
It is the second Sunday in May, so it falls between 8 and 14 May. Canada, Australia and New Zealand use the same day. In 2026 it was on 10 May, and in 2027 it is on 9 May.
Which other countries have a different date?
Many do. Mexico uses 10 May every year, Thailand 12 August, and much of the Arab world 21 March. Several European countries, including France, hold it in late May or early June.
