How the Retirement Date Calculator works

This retirement date calculator adds the retirement age you choose to your date of birth and shows the exact date you reach it. It also counts how long is left in years, months and days, and in total days and working weeks. Type your own target age; the calculator does not assume any country's state pension rules.

How the retirement date calculator works it out

The formula adds whole years, then any extra months, to the date of birth. If the birthday is on a day that does not exist in the target month, such as 29 February or 31 of a shorter month, the date moves to the last day of that month.

Worked examples

For example, someone born on 15 May 1980 who plans to retire at 67 reaches that age on Wednesday 15 May 2047. As a second example, a target of 66 years and 6 months from the same birthday gives 15 November 2046.

Choosing a retirement age

Pension ages differ by country and by birth year, and they change with new legislation, so this tool leaves the number to you. Check your government's pension service or your scheme's rules for the age that applies to you, then enter it here to get the date and countdown.

How many working weeks are left?

The calculator divides the days left by seven to give whole weeks. It does not remove holidays or leave, so treat it as an upper figure. The table shows the retirement date at a range of ages for the example birthday.

FAQ

When can I retire?

You can stop work whenever you can afford to, but pensions usually start at a set age. Find the age for your pension, enter it with your date of birth, and the calculator gives the date and the time left until you reach it.

Why is my retirement date on the last day of the month?

That happens when your birthday does not exist in the target month. A 29 February birthday lands on 28 February in a common year, and a 31st birthday moved by a number of months can land on the 30th or earlier.

Does the countdown count weekends and holidays?

Yes. Days left are calendar days, and working weeks are those days divided by seven. Leave, public holidays and part-time hours are not removed, so the real number of working days will be lower.
