How the Australia Working Days Calculator works
This Australia working days calculator counts business days between two dates for each state and territory, with that state's public holidays and substitute days removed. Annual leave or shutdown days can be taken off too.
Australia working days calculator: weekdays less holidays
Australian public holidays are set by each state and territory, so the number of business days between two dates depends on where the work is done. Every state shares New Year's Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and then adds between one and six of its own. Over a full year that ranges from 253 business days in New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania in 2026 down to 251 in Victoria, Western Australia and the ACT.
State days. New South Wales adds Easter Saturday and Sunday, the King's Birthday in June and Labour Day in October. Victoria adds Labour Day in March, the Easter weekend, the King's Birthday, the Friday before the AFL Grand Final and Melbourne Cup Day. Queensland takes Labour Day in May and the King's Birthday in October. Western Australia has Labour Day in March, Western Australia Day in June and the King's Birthday in late September. South Australia has Adelaide Cup Day, Easter Saturday, the King's Birthday, Labour Day in October and calls Boxing Day Proclamation Day. Tasmania adds Eight Hours Day and the King's Birthday. The ACT has Canberra Day, the Easter weekend, Reconciliation Day and Labour Day in October. The Northern Territory has Easter Saturday, May Day, the King's Birthday and Picnic Day.
Substitute days. When New Year's Day, Australia Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls on a weekend, an additional holiday is taken on the next weekday, and that is the day the calculator removes. Anzac Day is not substituted in most states when it falls on a weekend; Western Australia is the exception and is handled that way here. Easter Saturday and Sunday are public holidays in several states but always fall on a weekend, so they never change the business-day count and appear in the table as not counted.
What is not included. Regional show days, such as the Royal Queensland Show in Brisbane or the local show holidays in Tasmania and the Northern Territory, and part-day holidays such as Christmas Eve in South Australia, are not in the calendar. If one applies to you, take it off with the other days off box. Additional one-off holidays declared by a state are also not modelled.
Counting rule. Both dates are included, so Monday to Friday of one week is five business days. For the business days remaining after today, start from tomorrow. Business day definitions in contracts and legislation usually match this Monday-to-Friday, non-holiday rule, but check whether the contract names a particular state.

Working days formula and worked examples
The formula: working days = weekdays between the two dates − public holidays falling on weekdays (including substitute days) − leave days entered.
First example. 1–31 March 2026 has 22 weekdays. In Victoria, Labour Day on Monday 9 March falls on a weekday, leaving 21 working days.
Second example. April 2026 in NSW has 22 weekdays; Good Friday (3 April) and Easter Monday (6 April) leave 20. Anzac Day, 25 April, falls on a Saturday.
How many working days in a year in Australia? About 250, from 261 weekdays less 10 to 12 weekday public holidays, varying by state.
FAQ
How many business days are there in 2026 in Australia?
It depends on the state: 253 in New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania, 252 in South Australia and the Northern Territory, and 251 in Victoria, Western Australia and the ACT. Using only the seven national holidays gives 255, because Anzac Day falls on a Saturday in 2026 and is not substituted.
Are Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday counted?
They are public holidays in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, the ACT and elsewhere, and they appear in the holiday table, but they always fall on a weekend so they never reduce the business-day count. Only Good Friday and Easter Monday take days out of the working week.
Is Anzac Day substituted when it falls on a weekend?
In most states no: the holiday is observed on the day itself and no extra weekday is given. Western Australia does provide a substitute Monday, and the calculator applies that. In 2026 Anzac Day is a Saturday, which is why the WA count differs by a day from the rule elsewhere.
Which holidays does the national-only option use?
New Year's Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with substitute days for the fixed-date ones. Use it for a contract that refers to national public holidays, or when the work spans several states and you want the common baseline.
Does the calculator count both the start and end date?
Yes. If both fall on business days they are both included. To count the days after a date rather than from it, move the from date forward by one day. Swapping the two dates gives the same result.
