How the Landscaping Cost Calculator works
This landscaping cost calculator builds a budget for a garden project from its parts: lawn, paving, planting beds and fencing, each at the rate per area or length you enter, plus extra labour days and a design fee. It shows each line and the total. It has no built-in prices, since materials and labour vary a lot by region; get local quotes and enter them.
Landscapers usually price hard landscaping (patios, paths, walls, fences) by the square metre or metre run including materials, and soft landscaping (turf, planting) by area or by plant. Site clearance, skip hire, drainage and access are often priced as days of labour, which is what the labour line is for.
How the landscaping cost calculator works
The formula is total = lawn × rate + paving × rate + beds × rate + fence × rate + days × day rate
- design fee. For example, 50 m² of lawn at 10, 20 m² of paving at 80, 10 m² of beds at 30, 20 m of fencing at 60, five days of labour at 250 and a 500 design fee comes to 5,350. A second example: doubling the patio to 40 m² adds 1,600, the biggest single change in this garden.
Paving is usually the largest cost per square metre, because of the excavation, sub-base and bedding under it, so it pays to get the patio size right first. Use the garden area calculator for irregular shapes, and the turf calculator to see how many rolls the lawn needs.
Cost of the paving line by area and price per square metre

FAQ
How much does landscaping cost?
It depends on the size of the garden, the materials and local labour rates. Split the project into lawn, paving, planting, fencing and labour, get a rate for each from local landscapers, and enter them here to see the total and which part of the design drives the cost.
Why is paving so expensive?
A patio needs digging out, a compacted hardcore sub-base, a mortar or sand bed, the slabs and jointing. The labour and groundwork usually cost more than the slabs themselves, which is why price per square metre is much higher than for lawn or planting.
Should I pay a landscape designer?
For a simple lawn and patio you may not need one. For a full redesign with levels, drainage or structures, a designer's fee is often repaid by avoiding mistakes. Ask whether the fee is a fixed sum or a percentage of the build cost.
