How the League Table Calculator works

This league table calculator turns a list of match results into full standings. Paste one result per line, such as "Lions 2-1 Hawks", and it counts games played, wins, draws, losses, goals for and against, goal difference, points and recent form. You can change the points for a win, draw or loss and pick the tiebreak rule.

Every league table is built from the same arithmetic: each result adds a game played to both teams, adds goals to each side's for and against columns, and awards points by the outcome. The work is in keeping it all straight across dozens of results, which is where errors creep in on paper.

How the league table calculator ranks teams

Teams are sorted by points first. When points are level, the default order is goal difference, then goals scored, then alphabetical. Choose head-to-head instead and the tied teams are compared using only the games they played against each other, then by overall goal difference. The Form column shows the last five results in the order you entered them, newest on the right.

First example. Lions beat Hawks 2-1 and draw 1-1 with Rovers. With 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw, Lions have played 2, won 1, drawn 1, scored 3, conceded 2, for a goal difference of +1 and 4 points.

Second example. Rovers and Vipers both finish on 7 points and +2. Rovers scored 9 and Vipers 8, so Rovers rank higher on goals scored. With head-to-head on, a Vipers win over Rovers would put Vipers above them instead.

FAQ

How are points calculated in a league table?

Most football leagues give 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and none for a loss, and that is the default here. You can type any values, including decimals, so the calculator also works for leagues that use 2 points for a win or award points for a loss.

What is goal difference?

Goal difference is goals scored minus goals conceded across all games. A team that scored 30 and let in 22 has a goal difference of +8. It is the usual first tiebreak when teams finish level on points, followed by goals scored.

What does head-to-head mean as a tiebreak?

Head-to-head compares tied teams using only the matches between them. If three teams are level on points, a mini-table of their games against each other decides the order. Competitions such as UEFA group stages and La Liga use it before overall goal difference.

Can I use this for sports without goals?

Yes. Enter points, runs or frames in place of goals and the table still works, with the GF, GA and GD columns showing scored, conceded and the difference. Set the draw points to suit, or leave them if ties never happen in your sport.

How do I print or share the league table?

Use Print table for a clean sheet with just the standings, or Copy table to paste the rows into a spreadsheet or group chat as tab-separated text. The page address also updates as you type, so sharing the link shares the current results.
