How the Round-Robin Schedule Generator works

This round robin schedule generator builds a complete fixture list where every team plays every other team, once or home and away. Paste up to 64 teams, choose the format, add a first-round date if you want one, and it lays out every round with a bye for odd numbers. Print it for the noticeboard or copy it as plain text for an email or group chat.

A round robin is the fairest competition format there is: nobody is knocked out by one bad day and the final table reflects a whole season. The cost is time, because the number of matches grows with the square of the number of teams.

How the round robin schedule generator works

It uses the circle method, the same scheme behind most league fixture lists. One team is fixed in place and the rest rotate one position each round, which guarantees every pairing happens exactly once in n − 1 rounds. With an odd number of teams a blank slot is added, and whoever is drawn against it has a bye that round. Home and away is balanced as it goes: in each match the team with fewer home games so far is at home, so with an even number of teams everyone's home count is within one of everyone else's. A double round robin repeats the schedule with home and away swapped.

The formula for the total is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matches for a single round robin, and double that for home and away.

First example. 6 teams, single round robin: 5 rounds of 3 matches, 15 matches in all, 5 games each.

Second example. 9 teams, home and away: 18 rounds of 4 matches with one bye each round, 72 matches in all, 16 games and 2 byes each.

Tips and pitfalls

FAQ

How many games are in a round robin?

For n teams, a single round robin has n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 games, because every pair meets once. Eight teams play 28 games and ten play 45. Home and away doubles the count, so ten teams play 90 games across 18 rounds, with each team playing 18 of them.

How do you make a round robin schedule with an odd number of teams?

Add a dummy team called Bye and schedule as if the number were even. Whoever is drawn against the dummy rests that round. This generator does it automatically, so with 7 teams each round has three matches and one bye, and every team gets exactly one bye across the seven rounds.

What is the circle method?

It is the standard way to schedule a round robin. Write the teams in two rows, fix the first team, and rotate everyone else one place clockwise each round; facing teams play each other. After n − 1 rotations every team has met every other exactly once, with no repeats and no clashes.

What is a double round robin?

A double round robin plays every pairing twice, once at each team's home ground. It is the format used by most football leagues. This generator plays the first half as normal and then repeats it with home and away swapped, so return fixtures come in the same order as the first meetings.

Can I use this for a pool or group stage?

Yes. Generate one schedule per group, for example four groups of four for a 16-team tournament. Each group of four takes three rounds and six matches, and you can feed the group winners into the tournament bracket maker for the knockout stage.
