How the Trip Cost Calculator works

This trip cost calculator adds up what a drive really costs: the fuel for the distance, plus tolls, parking and anything else you pay along the way. Choose one way or a round trip, enter your car's economy and the fuel price, and see the total, the cost per km or mile and the share per person.

How the trip cost calculator works

The fuel part uses one formula: fuel cost = distance × litres per 100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre. MPG and km/L are converted to litres per 100 km first, and prices per gallon to prices per litre, so any mix of units works. Tolls are doubled for a round trip; parking and other costs are counted once.

First example. A 350 km drive each way in a car using 7.5 L/100km at $2.00 a litre burns 52.5 L on the return trip, so $105 of fuel. Add $12 of tolls each way and $30 of parking and the trip costs $159, or $53 each for three people.

Second example. 200 miles one way at 30 MPG (US) with fuel at $3.50 a US gallon uses 6.7 gallons, so the drive costs $23.33, about 11.7 cents a mile.

How many litres does a 100 km drive use? Exactly the L/100km figure, so a 7.5 L/100km car uses 7.5 L. Real economy is usually 10 to 20% worse than the official figure, so use your own fill-up records if you have them.

FAQ

How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?

Divide the distance by 100, multiply by the car's litres per 100 km and multiply by the price per litre. A 400 km trip at 8 L/100km and $1.90 a litre uses 32 L, which is $60.80 in fuel.

Should I split the trip cost evenly with passengers?

An even split of fuel, tolls and parking is the usual approach and is what this page shows. Some groups leave the driver out of the split, or add a share for wear and tear, so agree on it first.

Does the trip cost include wear and tear?

Not by default. Tyres, servicing and depreciation add roughly 10 to 30 cents per km for a typical car. Enter an estimate in Other costs, such as $40 for 400 km, if you want it in the total.

Is it cheaper to drive or fly?

For two or more people over a few hundred kilometres, driving usually wins because the fuel cost is shared. A solo traveller on a long route often finds a budget flight cheaper once tolls, parking and a night's stay on the road are added.

Why does my car use more fuel than the official figure?

Official figures come from lab tests at moderate speeds. Motorway speeds, air conditioning, roof boxes, heavy loads and cold engines on short trips all add fuel, so real use is often 10 to 20% higher.
