How the VAT and GST Rates by Country works

This table lists VAT rates by country: the standard value-added tax or goods and services tax rate in 169 countries and territories, the name the tax goes by locally, and a flag for the 27 EU member states. Search by country, sort by rate, or download the whole list for a spreadsheet or a checkout.

What the VAT rates by country table shows

Each row gives the standard rate, the one that applies to most goods and services. Almost every country also has reduced rates for food, books, medicine or public transport, and some zero-rate exports or basic groceries. Those reduced rates vary item by item and change often, so they are not in this table; check the tax authority's own site before charging them.

VAT, GST and sales tax

VAT and GST are the same idea under two names: a tax charged at every stage of the supply chain, where each business reclaims the tax it paid on its inputs. Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India and Singapore call it GST; Japan calls it consumption tax. The United States has no national VAT, only state and local sales taxes charged once at the till, so it does not appear in the list.

Keeping the rates current

The rates come from the Wikipedia article on value-added tax, which is compiled from national tax authorities and updated quickly when a budget changes a rate. The retrieval date is shown under the table. Rates move every year somewhere, so treat this as a starting point and confirm a rate before you file a return.

FAQ

Which country has the highest VAT rate?

Hungary has the highest standard rate in the table at 27 percent, followed by Finland at 25.5 percent and the other Nordic countries at 25. Sort the rate column to see the full order. Several Gulf states and small territories sit at the other end, with rates of five percent or less.

Do I charge VAT when I sell to another country?

It depends on where you and your customer are and whether they are a business. Inside the EU, sales of digital services to consumers are taxed at the customer's country rate through the One Stop Shop. This table gives the rates; your accountant or the tax authority gives the rules for your situation.
