How the BattleTech Name Generator works

This BattleTech name generator names the people and machines of the Inner Sphere: MechWarriors such as Grayson "Hammer" Carlyle, BattleMechs such as the Thunderhawk TH-3B, mercenary units such as Kell's Lancers, and nobles of the Great Houses. Use them for tabletop campaigns, MechWarrior games and fiction.

How the BattleTech name generator works

BattleTech mixes medieval feudalism with giant war machines, and its names reflect both. MechWarriors get ordinary names with a callsign, sometimes a rank; Draconis Combine officers use Japanese ranks such as Sho-sa. BattleMechs get a model name and a chassis code like real military hardware, since a single design comes in many variants. Mercenary units are often named for their founder or their home world, Kell's Lancers or the Northwind Highlanders, and nobles belong to the Great Houses that rule the successor states.

    Naming your mercenary company

A merc company is the heart of most BattleTech campaigns, so give it a name players will shout. Founder names, such as Wolf's Dragoons, tell a story about who started it. Colour-plus-unit names, the Gray Death Legion, look good on a flag. Place names tie the unit to a world it fights for, or once lost.

    FAQ

What are the Great Houses in BattleTech?

The five Great Houses ruling the Inner Sphere are Steiner, Davion, Kurita, Liao and Marik. Each rules a successor state with its own culture, and noble characters usually belong to one of them or to a lesser house sworn to it.

    How are BattleMech names written?

A BattleMech has a model name and a variant code, such as Atlas AS7-D. The code identifies the chassis and loadout, so different variants of the same model carry different weapons and armour.

    Are these official BattleTech names?

No. The generator invents mechs, units and characters in the setting's style. The Great House surnames come from the setting for flavour, so pair them with your own first names and titles.
