How the Bridge Name Generator works
This bridge name generator names crossings for towns, maps and stories: old local names such as Kingsford Bridge and the Packhorse Bridge, grand names such as the Queen Adelaide Bridge, and fantasy names such as the Troll's Span and the Bridge of Sighs, for a game map, novel or model railway.
How the bridge name generator names crossings
Real bridge names follow a few simple patterns. Old bridges take the name of the ford they replaced, Kingsford, Abbotsford, or of what crossed them, packhorses, oxen, monks going to the abbey, or the toll paid to cross. Victorian bridges were often named after royalty or the people who paid for them, and many are simply the Old Bridge or the New Bridge, however old the new one has become. Fantasy bridges lean on drama and mood.
Bridges in worldbuilding
A bridge is a natural choke point, so in a story or tabletop campaign it is where tolls are taken, armies are held and trolls lurk. Naming it after an event, the Bridge of Oaths, the Drowned Span, gives players a hook. A town with a bridge often takes its name from it, as with Cambridge and Bristol, which began as Brycgstow, the place at the bridge.

FAQ
How are bridges usually named?
Bridges are usually named after the place, river or road they serve, the person who funded or opened them, a monarch or anniversary, or a feature such as a toll, ferry or ford they replaced.
What is the Bridge of Sighs?
The Bridge of Sighs is an enclosed bridge in Venice, built in 1600, that led prisoners from the Doge's Palace to the prison. Lord Byron popularised the name, and copies exist in Oxford and Cambridge.
Can I use these names for a real bridge?
Yes, they are invented, though common names like Mill Bridge exist in many towns. A real public bridge is named by the local council or highway authority, which may have its own naming policy.
