How the Dragon Name Generator works

This dragon name generator gives a fresh list with every click. Generate dragon names by kind: chromatic dragons such as Vyrathax the Red and Ashkarax Cinderwing, metallic dragons such as Ithilvarion the Gold and Auralissa Dawnscale, ancient wyrms such as Old Morrowfang and Great Wyrm Zsarathoth, drakes and wyrmlings such as Skarra and Vex Smokesnout, and titled dragons such as Kharvessa, the Scourge of Ravenreach. Choose female, male or either and generate up to a hundred at once.

Dragon name generator: how the names are built

A dragon's name has to be as long as the dragon is old and as harsh as the dragon is cruel. Chromatic dragon names, the evil ones, are built from hissing, cracking sounds, x, z, kh, th, Vyrathax, Zsarathoth, Kharvex, with a colour and an epithet about burning and killing, Cinderwing, Kingsbane, Cityburner. Metallic dragon names, the good ones, are built on Latin and elven light, Ithilvarion, Auralissa, Solennor, with a metal and an epithet about law and light, Dawnscale, Oathscale, Peacebringer. Gem dragon names, the psionic ones that stand between the two, ring like cut stone, Sarvessira, Amethyx, Quarzor, with a gem and an epithet about the mind, Mindspark, Prismwing, Clearsight. Ancient wyrm names are older and stranger, Morrowfang, Oroboranth, Ghuldrax, with Old or Great Wyrm in front and an epithet about what they broke, Mountainbreaker, Doom of Ostia, and sometimes the place they slept beneath. Drakes and wyrmlings get short names, Skarr, Ember, Vexi, with a hatchling's epithet, Smokesnout, Firstflame. Dragon with title gives the name as the kingdom knows it, the Scourge of Ravenreach, Guardian of the Silent Vale.

The gender option splits every first-name list, so a female red dragon and a male gold dragon are as available as the reverse; the colours, metals, epithets and titles are shared. Some names, Morrowfang, Zsarathoth, Ember, Nyx, appear on both sides because a dragon's name in most stories is older than the idea of gendering it.

The places are the shared map of this section, Ravenreach, the Iron Waste, the ruins of Ostia, the Frostgard peaks, so a dragon generated here is the one who burned the city the fantasy city page named and sleeps under the mountain the dwarf page named. The dwarves of Khazdelve have a wyrm under them; the dragon with title kind names it.

The lists are original. Dragon naming in games and fiction draws on a shared stock of harsh syllables and colour-and-metal conventions, so a name here may coincide with one in some published setting; none is copied, and a name intended for commercial use should be searched first.

For the dragonborn who descend from these dragons, the dragonborn page; for the kobolds who serve them, the kobold page; for the hoard, the artifact page; for the lair, the dungeon page; and for the knight who rides out to kill the dragon, the knight page.

    FAQ

Why are chromatic and metallic names different?

Because they are different in every setting that uses the split: chromatic dragons are the evil, greedy, elemental ones and metallic dragons are the lawful, wise ones. The names follow, harsh and hissing for the chromatic, bright and Latinate for the metallic, so a reader hears the alignment in the name.

How do I name an ancient dragon?

Use the Ancient wyrm kind. It gives Old or Great Wyrm as a prefix, an adjective like Undying or Deathless, an epithet about what the wyrm destroyed, and sometimes the place it slept beneath, so the name reads as a legend the kingdom tells rather than a label.

What are the drake and wyrmling names for?

For the small ones. A dragon's hatchling, a drake, a pseudodragon or a wyrmling has a short, sharp name, Skarr, Vexi, Ember, with a hatchling's epithet, Smokesnout, Runt, that it will grow out of when it earns the long name and the title.

Do the titles connect to the shared map?

Yes. Dragon with title names the dragon as a kingdom knows it, the Scourge of Ravenreach, the Guardian of the Silent Vale, Terror of the Iron Waste, and the places are the shared map of this section, so the dragon threatens or protects a land other pages named.

Are any of these names from published works?

No. Every list is original. Dragon naming across games and fiction shares harsh syllables, colour and metal conventions and grand epithets, so a coincidental match with a published dragon is possible, and a name meant for commercial use should be searched first.
