How the Fantasy Magic School / Academy Name Generator works

This magic school name generator makes fantasy magic school and academy names in six kinds: academies and colleges (the Collegium of the Nine Lamps, the Grey Conservatory of Corinthos), wizards' towers (Vessandra's Tower, the Sleepless Spire), orders and circles (the Order of the Sealed Book, the Ninefold Circle), school houses (House Greymantle, the Raven Tower), academy mottoes, and full entries with a subject taught and a rule. Use them for magic-school settings, the wizard's sanctum and the order the villain belongs to.

How the magic school name generator works

Where magic is taught says what kind of magic it is. A Collegium with a charter and a faculty is one setting; a lonely tower with one apprentice a decade is another; a masked order that burns its book after reading is a third, and the reader knows which world they are in from the name. This generator produces the names of all three and the smaller parts of an academy, split by kind, because a college, a tower and an order are named in different registers.

Academy or college gives the institutional form, with the Latinate nouns (Collegium, Lyceum, Athenaeum) real universities used, a city from the section's shared map, a subject and sometimes a founder from the shared wizards. Wizard's tower gives the solitary form, named for its wizard or its quality, the Leaning Tower of Ozmandine, the Tower of Nine Winds. Order or circle gives the secret-society form, the Order of the Grey Lantern, the Circle of Seven Masters, for the group with a rule and a symbol. School house gives the houses a magic-school story sorts its students into, named for founders, colours and beasts, so a batch produces a set of rivals. Motto gives the line carved over the door, and Full academy entry combines a name with a subject and a rule or house list so the school arrives ready to be attended.

The cities, wizards and founders are shared with the rest of this section, so Vessandra's Tower belongs to the wizard whose spells the spell page named and the Conservatory of Corinthos is in the city page's capital. The lists are original. Magic schools in published fiction are named by the same process (a Latin noun, a founder, a symbol), so a coincidental match with one is possible; no published school, house or order is reproduced, and a search before commercial use is worth doing.

For the spells the academy teaches, the spell page; for the book in its library, the book page; for the wizard who founded it, the character page; for the potion brewed in its laboratory, the potion page; and for the curse on its oldest tower, the curse page.

    FAQ

How do I build a whole magic school?

Generate one academy name, four or five houses, a motto and an order or two for the faculty's secret societies, then a wizard's tower for the headmaster's private retreat. The Full academy entry kind does most of that in one line if you want the short version.

Why are there orders as well as schools?

Because not all magic is taught in a building. The order with a rule and a symbol is the older form, the guild of wizards rather than the university, and a setting usually has both: the college for the respectable magic and the circle for the kind the college forbids.

What are the rules in the full entries for?

For the plot. A tower whose stair has a different number of steps each time, or an order whose members lose their names, is a setting detail that becomes a scene the moment the party arrives. The rules are written to be broken by protagonists.

Do the schools match the other fantasy pages?

Yes. The wizards who own the towers are the shared wizard list the spell and book pages use, the cities are the shared map and the house names borrow the noble house page's families, so the academy generated here fits a world built from the rest of this section.

Are any of these schools from published works?

No. The names are original and no published school, house or order is reproduced. Schools of magic are named from the same Latin nouns and symbols everywhere, so a coincidental match is possible and worth a search before commercial use.
