How the Fantasy Castle / Fortress Name Generator works
This fantasy castle name generator is free and makes a new batch each time. Generate fantasy castle and fortress names in six kinds: the royal seat named for its house, the border fort on the edge of the map, the shining citadel, the wizard's tower, the dark fortress of the enemy and the ruined keep with something living in it. Results run from Ravenhold and Castle Draventh to the Citadel of the Ninth Star and Morgath, the Dread Fortress.
Fantasy castle name generator: where the names come from
Castles are where fantasy keeps its plots, and each kind of castle is named differently. A royal seat is named for the family or the rock it stands on; a border fort is named for the thing it watches; a citadel gets an abstract, shining name; a wizard's tower is named for its owner or its colour; and a dark fortress has a name built out of hard consonants so the reader knows what it is before anyone goes in. This page keeps those six registers apart.
Royal castle uses the compound form of real English and Norman castles (Ravenhold, Stormcrest, Goldmont) and the Castle Something form, and ties some results to the invented noble houses used across this section, so that a castle can be the seat of a house you generated on the noble house page. Border fort produces the plain names of garrisons: Fort Rook, Wolfgate, The Northern Watch. Citadel gives the grand forms that go with holy orders and high elves, the Citadel of Dawn or the Citadel of the Seven Swords. Wizard tower is the Ivory Tower, the Tower of Whispers and the possessive form with an invented wizard's name. Dark fortress builds a harsh two-syllable name in the tradition of every dark lord's seat and adds an epithet. Ruined keep takes the royal form and wrecks it.
The dark fortress syllables are deliberately generic within the tradition rather than copied from any published setting; the tradition itself is public, and a fortress called Durgath or Skarmor belongs to whoever writes it. The noble house and wizard name lists are original.
A castle needs a location and a lord. The landmark page gives the mountain or river it stands on, the kingdom page the realm it defends, the noble house page the family in it and the dungeon page the levels beneath it, which is where the players will end up. For the epithet of the lord, the title page adds "the Unbowed".
FAQ
What is the difference between a castle, a keep, a citadel and a fortress?
In real usage a keep is the central tower of a castle, a citadel is a fortress that commands a city, and a fortress is any large fortified place. Fantasy uses them more loosely as flavour words, and this page follows the genre: the kind you pick sets the mood rather than the architecture.
Why do the dark fortresses sound similar to each other?
Because the register is narrow on purpose: hard consonants, dark vowels and a short suffix. It is the sound readers have learned to associate with the enemy's stronghold, and it works because it is recognisable. Take the epithet off a result if you want it to sound less obviously evil.
Can I tie a castle to a noble house I already have?
Yes. The Royal castle kind includes patterns that name a house, and the house list is the one shared with the noble house page. Swap the generated house for yours; the castle name in front of it stands on its own.
How do I name a castle for a real-world historical setting?
Use the Royal castle and Border fort kinds and discard any result with a fantasy element. The compound shapes (-hold, -mont, -gate, -watch) are real English and Norman patterns and read as period without adjustment.
Are the wizard's names in the tower patterns usable as characters?
They are original invented names and you are free to use them, though they are only fifteen. For a proper wizard with a surname and a title, the fantasy character page with the Mage archetype produces a fuller name.
