How the Fantasy Religion / Deity Name Generator works
This fantasy god name generator makes fantasy gods and goddesses with a name, a domain and a title, in five kinds: the bright gods and goddesses of a pantheon, the dark gods that cults worship, the old nature spirits of the wild, and the religions and cults themselves. Results run from Korthan the Iron Father and Vaelith, Goddess of Tides and Mercy to Zulgoth, He Who Waits Below.
How the fantasy god name generator works
A fantasy religion needs three things: a god, a domain and a name for the worship. This page gives all three, and it gives the god a title, because gods in real mythology are almost never called by their bare name; they are the Thunderer, the Far-Seeing, the Lady of the Hearth. The title is what the priests say and what the players remember.
God and Goddess produce the pantheon's ordinary members, with a name assembled from syllables that sound old and clear, a primary domain and sometimes a second, minor one, since real gods accumulate odd responsibilities (bees, doors, lost things) and those are what make them feel real. Dark god builds a harsher name and pairs it with a domain from the list of things people fear and a title in the "He Who" form, which is the form worshippers use when the name itself should not be said. Nature spirit gives the animist layer beneath the pantheon: the Green Man, the Old Grandmother of the River, the Horned Warden. Religion names the organised faith, as a church, a way or a path, with the abstract symbols (the Wheel, the Open Hand, the Three Rivers) that a religion paints on its doors. Cult names the secret societies that gather around the dark gods.
The domains are drawn from the things every pantheon covers: sun, sea, war, harvest, death, and the dark equivalents of plague, lies and undeath. The syllable tables are original and the titles are invented, though the shape of them, a god with an epithet, is as old as Homer and belongs to no one.
Generate a god here and then take the results to the pantheon page, which arranges several gods into a family with relationships, or to the realm page for the plane the god rules. For the temple where the god is worshipped, the dungeon page's Lost temple kind or the academy page's religious options will name the building. The prophecy page gives the god something to say.
FAQ
How do I build a whole pantheon from this?
Generate a batch of gods and goddesses, one or two dark gods and a few nature spirits, and pick the ones whose domains do not overlap. The pantheon page in this section does this automatically and adds the relationships between them, which is what makes a pantheon a family rather than a list.
Why do the dark gods have titles like "He Who Waits Below"?
Because in most mythologies the dangerous god's name is taboo and the worshippers use a circumlocution instead, and the "He Who" form is the traditional English shape of one. It also lets a game master use the god for years without a player learning the name.
Are the domains meant to be balanced?
No. Real pantheons are lopsided, with three gods of war and one of bees, and the second-domain list is deliberately full of small, specific responsibilities so that a generated god has a personality rather than a job title. A goddess of storms and doors is more interesting than one of storms alone.
Can I use a religion result with a god from a different result?
Yes. The religion patterns that include a god name draw from the same syllable tables as the God kind, so swap in whichever god you generated. The abstract religion names (the Way of the Open Hand) can be attached to any god or to none.
Are any of these names from real religions?
No. The gods, titles and symbols are invented, and the domains are the generic categories all mythologies share. The forms (a church, a way, a temple of a symbol) are common to many real faiths and are used only as forms.
