How the Fantasy Name Generator works
This fantasy name generator makes fantasy character names for nine races from one page: human, elf, dwarf, orc, halfling, gnome, dragonborn, tiefling and goblin. Each race has its own first-name syllables and its own surnames or clan names, so the results sound like the people they belong to. Pick a race or leave it on Any for a mixed batch.
How the fantasy name generator works
This is the hub page for the fantasy section. It gives you a decent name for any of the common fantasy races quickly; the dedicated race pages go deeper, with subrace selects, gendered lists and more patterns each. Use this page when you need a party's worth of mixed names in one click, and the race pages when you are naming a character you will keep.
Each race is built from a prefix list, a suffix list and a surname or clan list, and the lists are written to the conventions readers expect. Human names are the plain Anglo-Norman shapes of most fantasy fiction (Alric Ashford, Gwenith Thornley), sometimes with a place of origin. Elf names run to liquid consonants, long vowels and a nature-image surname (Aelwen Silverleaf). Dwarf names are short, hard and Norse-flavoured, with a metalwork surname or a clan hall (Thorin Ironfist, Dagrun of the Deep Hall). Orc names are guttural, one or two syllables, with a violent epithet or a tribe (Grukash Skullsplitter). Halfling names are cosy English diminutives with a rustic surname (Pipkin Goodbarrel). Gnome names are quick and clicky with a gadget surname (Fibble Sparkwhistle). Dragonborn names are harsh and multi-syllabled with a long clan name. Tiefling names are either infernal-sounding or a single abstract virtue name, a convention where the tiefling takes a word like Sorrow or Vigil as their whole name. Goblin names are short, spitty and often carry a mocking epithet.
The count field takes 1 to 100 and the generator dedupes within a batch, so you can ask for a whole tavern of patrons or a whole warband. Because the lists are original syllable tables rather than copied name lists, the names are not tied to any published setting, though a random result can coincide with a name from a book or a game by chance.
For place names, guilds, taverns, weapons, spells and the rest of a world, see the other pages in the fantasy section.
FAQ
Which race should I pick for a generic fantasy hero?
Human. Human names are the ones that read as neutral in most fantasy settings and that other players will remember and pronounce. If the character is meant to be a little exotic, elf names carry that without being hard to say; dwarf names carry it with a gruffer feel.
Are these names from a specific game?
No. The lists are original syllable tables written to match the conventions the races have in general fantasy fiction and tabletop games. Some conventions, like the tiefling virtue name or the dragonborn clan name, come from the genre at large, but no list is copied from a rulebook.
Can I get male or female names?
This hub page mixes them so that Any produces a varied batch. The dedicated race pages, such as the elf and dwarf generators, have a gender select where the race's naming convention makes a difference. Human, halfling and gnome names on this page include both masculine and feminine syllables.
Why do some results have no surname?
Because the race's convention does not always use one. Orcs and goblins often go by a single name with an epithet or tribe, and tieflings who take a virtue name use nothing else. The patterns reflect that, so a batch will contain a mix of one-part and two-part names.
How do I pronounce a name with an apostrophe or an accent?
Treat an apostrophe as a slight pause between syllables and an accented vowel as a separately sounded one, so Aelwen'thas is three beats and Silë is two. Both are decorations rather than rules, and you can drop them if your table finds them fussy.
