How the Fantasy Plant / Herb Name Generator works
Use this fantasy plant name generator to fill a shortlist in seconds. Generate fantasy plant and herb names in seven kinds: healing herbs (kingsfoil, sweet mendroot), poisons and banes (wolfsbane, widow's cup), trees (the Weeping Ash, ironwood), flowers (moonbell, widow's lantern), fungi and mosses (nightcap, grave-moss), magical plants (starbloom, the Everblooming Lotus) and full herbal entries that add where it grows and what it does. Use them for herbalists, alchemists, bestiaries and the ingredient list of every potion.
Fantasy plant name generator: the patterns behind each name
Plants are the small print of a fantasy world and the reader notices when it is missing. A healer who reaches for kingsfoil is in a place with a botany; one who reaches for a healing herb is in a rulebook. This generator produces plant names in the shapes real folk botany uses, because the real names (foxglove, deadly nightshade, hangman's rope) are already fantasy names, and separates the kinds because a healing herb, a poison and a mushroom are named in different moods.
Healing herb gives the compound forms (kingsfoil, sunwort, heartleaf) and the possessive forms (Saint's Balm, Shepherd's Purse) that real healing plants carry. Poison or bane gives the dark compounds (wolfsbane, gravethorn, corpsecap) and the possessives of villains (Hangman's Cup, Witch's Candle). Tree gives named and species trees, the Weeping Ash and ironwood, for the tree that stands at the crossroads or the wood every ship is built from. Flower is the gentle register (moonbell, Maiden's Slipper). Fungus or moss gives the cellar-and-churchyard register (nightcap, bogcap, glowmoss). Magical plant reaches for the plant that does something impossible, the Singing Lotus and starbloom, with an origin in the section's shared map. Full herbal entry produces a line an in-world herbal would carry: name, habitat and use, so an alchemist's recipe or an assassin's shopping list can be filled from one batch.
The places in the habitats are the section's shared map (the Deep Wood, the Grey Moors, the Silent Vale), so a herb that grows on the Sundered Isles grows on the islands the island page named. The lists are original. Because folk plant names are made from the same few hundred words everywhere, results may coincide with real plants (wolfsbane is real) or with a plant in some published setting; search a name before commercial use.
For the potion the herb goes into, the potion page; for the bestiary or herbal that lists it, the book page; for the shop that sells it, the shop page's Apothecary kind; and for the creature that eats it, the creature page.
FAQ
Why do so many fantasy plants sound like real ones?
Because the real ones were named by the same process: a feature plus a body part, an owner plus an object, a colour plus a common name. Foxglove, cowslip and deadman's fingers are real, and a generator that imitates the process will sometimes reproduce a real name. Treat that as a feature; it is what makes the invented ones sound right.
What are the full herbal entries for?
For the in-world document: the herbal on the shelf, the alchemist's recipe, the healer's satchel. Each gives a name, a habitat and one use in a single line, so a batch of ten is a herbal page ready to hand to players who want to forage.
Can I use these for an alchemy system?
Yes. Generate healing herbs, poisons and magical plants separately, assign each a rarity by habitat (the ones that grow only where the dead are buried are rare), and the potion page will give you what the combinations produce. The uses in the full entries are deliberately specific so they can become mechanics.
Do the plants match the other fantasy pages?
Yes. The habitats are the section's shared map and the magical plants' origins are its shared places, so the herb that grows in the Silent Vale is in the vale the landmark page named, and the potion page's ingredients can be drawn from here.
Are any of these plants from published works?
No. The names are original, though some coincide with real plants because the naming process is the same, and a match with a plant in some published setting is possible for the same reason. Search a name before relying on it commercially.
