How the Flashcard Generator works

This flashcard generator turns a list of terms and definitions into printable double-sided cards. Type one card per line, choose 8 or 10 cards to a sheet, and download a page to print, or a file to import the same cards into Anki or Quizlet.

How the flashcard generator works

Each line is one card, with the term and definition split by a vertical bar, a tab, an equals sign, a colon and space, or a spaced dash. The printable file puts the terms on one page and the definitions on the next. On the definition page each row is mirrored, left and right swapped, so that when you print double-sided and flip on the long edge every definition lands behind its term. Cut along the lines to separate the cards.

First example. The ten French verbs in the box make 2 sheets at 8 cards a sheet: the first holds 8 cards front and back, and the second holds the last 2, voir and venir. Choosing 10 cards a sheet fits all ten on one sheet.

Second example. A list copied from a spreadsheet with the term in column A and the definition in column B pastes in with a tab between them, which the generator reads as the split. The Anki or Quizlet download writes the same pairs back out tab-separated, one card per line.

Which layout should I pick? 8 cards a sheet gives larger cards with room for longer definitions. 10 a sheet saves paper for short vocabulary.

FAQ

How do I print double-sided flashcards?

Open the downloaded file in your browser, print with two-sided printing on, and choose flip on long edge. The backs are already mirrored to line up with the fronts.

My printer only prints one side. What do I do?

Print the odd pages, put the stack back in the tray turned over, then print the even pages. Test with one sheet first, since printers feed paper differently.

How do I import the cards into Anki?

Download the Anki or Quizlet file, then in Anki choose File, Import and pick it. Anki detects the tab between the fields and puts the term on the front and the definition on the back.

Can I use a comma to separate the term and definition?

No, because definitions often contain commas. Use a vertical bar, a tab, an equals sign, a colon or a spaced dash instead. Only the first separator on a line is used.

Are my cards saved anywhere?

No. The cards are built in your browser and the files are made on your device. Nothing is uploaded. Keep your list in a text file to reuse it later.
