How the Monster Stat Block Generator works

This monster stat block generator builds a brand-new creature for your table in one click. Pick a challenge rating, creature type, size and environment, or leave them on Random. You get a name, appearance, lore, tactics, habitat and loot on the front of a tarot-sized card. Flip it over for a complete 5e-compatible stat block you can run straight away.

How the monster stat block generator balances a creature

Every number on the back of the card comes from the challenge rating. The generator uses the monster-building guidelines for 5th edition to set armour class, hit points, attack bonus, damage per round and saving throw DC for the chosen CR. Hit points land in the right band, then shrink when the creature resists ordinary weapons, so its effective toughness stays on target. Damage is split across the multiattack, a recharge ability and any riders so the total sits in the expected range for that rating.

Size, type and environment

Size sets the hit die, from d4 for Tiny creatures up to d20 for Gargantuan ones, and nudges Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, reach and speed. Creature type shapes the ability scores, damage resistances and immunities, condition immunities, senses, languages, traits, reactions and innate spells. A construct shrugs off poison and charm, an undead drains life, a fey charms and teleports. Environment chooses the name, movement modes such as swimming or climbing, camouflage, the lair and the elemental damage of breath weapons.

Legendary and lair actions

From challenge rating 15 up, and sometimes from 10, the creature becomes legendary. It gains Legendary Resistance, three legendary actions and three lair actions tied to its environment, with save DCs and damage scaled to its rating.

What is on the card

The front holds everything you need to introduce the monster: name, type, alignment, CR and XP, a short description, lore, tactics drawn from its real abilities, where it lives and what it carries. The back is the full stat block, auto-sized to fit one side. Use Copy to paste both sides into your notes.

FAQ

Is the generated monster balanced for its challenge rating?

It is built to the published 5th edition targets for armour class, hit points, attack bonus, damage per round and save DC at that rating. Treat it as a strong first draft and adjust hit points or damage if your party is unusually strong or weak.

Can I use these monsters in my published adventure?

The names, lore and stat blocks are generated fresh each time and are yours to use. The underlying rules come from the SRD 5.1 under CC-BY-4.0, so credit the SRD if you publish material built on those rules.

Why does the text on the card get smaller for high-CR monsters?

Legendary monsters have many more traits, actions, legendary actions and lair actions. The card shrinks the text until the whole stat block fits on one side, so you never need to scroll. Copy the card if you want it at full size.

What does the Random option do?

Random picks a value for that input each time you generate. Random size is weighted by challenge rating and type, so a CR 25 monster is far more likely to be Huge or Gargantuan than Tiny.
