How the Loot Name Generator works
A loot name generator for video game item names with prefixes, suffixes and rarities. Action RPGs roll random affixes onto every drop, turning a plain sword into a Scorched Longsword of Echoes. Pick a rarity and generate item names from common gear to named legendary weapons and set pieces.
How the loot name generator works
Items are built from parts, just like in an action RPG. Common items are just a base type, Recurve Bow. Magic items add a prefix, a suffix or both, like Barbed Dagger or Kite Shield of the Heron. Prefixes usually describe damage or element, Rimed for cold and Venomed for poison, while suffixes describe a bonus, of Mending for healing or of the Magpie for finding gold. Rare items get a random two-part name joined into one word, Gloamknell, Wand. Legendary items get a unique name and a title, Marrowgnaw, Bane of Quiet Things. Set items belong to a named person, Captain Wren's Mantle.
Colour coding
Games usually colour item names by rarity, such as white for common, blue for magic, yellow for rare and orange for legendary. Pair each result with a colour for the full effect.
FAQ
What is an affix in a loot game?
An affix is a word added to an item's name that shows a random bonus. Prefixes come before the base item, like Thundering, and suffixes come after, like of Sparks. Together they tell players what the item does at a glance.
How are rare items named?
Rare items get a random two-part name, like Ember plus gnaw, instead of listing their bonuses. The name sounds special and mysterious, and players have to check the tooltip to see which rolls the item actually has.
What makes a legendary item name good?
A legendary name should sound like it has a story. Pair a unique name like Sunderquill with a grand title like Edge of the Unmade Sky, so players feel the item was forged for one hero or one terrible battle.
Can I use these names in my game?
Yes. The names and affixes are original and free to use in action RPGs, looter shooters, tabletop treasure tables and game jams. Use the parts as a starting point for your own affix system with your own bonuses.
