How the Ogre Name Generator works
This ogre name generator is free and makes a new batch each time. Generate ogre names: plain names such as Gundrok and Gorba, names with an epithet such as Blunk Manmasher and Thrumm the Hungry, two-headed ogre names such as Krum and Mogduk, ogre mage names such as Vashtor Ninetongues, and lair names such as Sheepgullet Hollow and Blunk's Cave on the Wexbury Road. Choose female, male or either and generate up to a hundred at once.
Ogre name generator: where the names come from
Ogre names are big, dumb and blunt, because the ogre is. One or two heavy syllables, Gundrok, Blunk, Thrumm, Gorba, with lots of u and o, and an epithet about eating something too large, Sheepgullet, Cowswallower, Horsechewer, or breaking something too solid, Wallbasher, Oxbreaker, Gatesmasher. The comedy is in the scale: an orc's epithet is a battle boast and an ogre's is a dinner. This generator gives the plain name, the epithet, the two-headed ogre who argues with itself, the ogre mage who is the sinister exception to all of this, and the lair with the bones outside.
Plain name gives the bare name, sometimes with Old or Big in front, since ogres in stories are referred to as Old Gorba and Big Blunk by the villagers who fear them. Name with epithet adds the boast, the adjective or the body part, Dorg One-Eye, Hurga the Smelly. Two-headed ogre names two heads, since the two-headed ogre is a fixture of the genre and each head has its own name and opinion, Krum and Mogduk, Ulba-Bolma. Ogre mage gives the other kind of ogre entirely: the cunning, cold, shape-shifting horned sorcerer of Eastern-flavoured fantasy, with a longer and more sinister name, Vashtor, Zhulmir, Ilvandor, and an epithet about deceit and frost. Lair name gives the cave, the larder or the crushed farm, sometimes sited on a road or a moor this section has already named.
The gender option splits the first-name list; female ogre names are the same heavy stems with an -a on the end, Gorba, Mogga, Thrumma, and take every epithet and lair. The ogre mage list is not split, since ogre magi are rarer and their names are deliberately unlike the rest.
The lairs sit on the shared map of this section, the Wexbury Road, the Sheep Downs, the Grey Moors, so an ogre generated here is the one eating the sheep of a village the fantasy town page named. The lists are original. Ogre naming shares a small stock of blunt sounds and food epithets across games and fiction, so a name here may coincide with one in some published setting; none is copied, and a name intended for commercial use should be searched first.
For the trolls that share the ogre's hills, the troll page; for the giants the ogre serves, the giant page; for the village being eaten, the fantasy town page; and for the club, the weapon page.
FAQ
What makes a name sound like an ogre?
Weight. Ogre names use heavy back vowels, u and o, with blunt consonants, Gundrok, Blunk, Mumbo, so the name lands like a club. The epithets are about eating and breaking on a scale nothing else does, Cowswallower, Gatesmasher, which tells the reader the ogre is big, hungry and not clever.
How do the two-headed names work?
The pattern draws two first names and joins them, Krum and Mogduk, Ulba-Bolma, so each head has its own name. The shared epithet, if any, belongs to the body. Play the two heads as two characters who disagree about whether to eat the party.
Why are the ogre mage names different?
Because the ogre mage is a different creature. In most games it is a horned, cunning, spell-casting ogre drawn from Eastern folklore, and its name should be long, cold and sinister where the common ogre's is short and dumb. The list gives that register, Vashtor Ninetongues, Zhulmir the Unseen.
Do the lairs connect to the fantasy section?
Yes. Several are sited on roads and moors the section has already named, the Wexbury Road, the Sheep Downs, the Grey Moors, Cairnhold fells, so the ogre's cave is a day's walk from a town the town page generated, which is where the adventure hook comes from.
Are any of these names from published works?
No. Every list is original. Ogre naming in games and fiction shares a small stock of blunt syllables and comic epithets, so a coincidental match with a published ogre is possible, and a name meant for commercial use should be searched first.
