How the Orc Name Generator works

This orc name generator makes harsh orcish names for male and female orcs, half-orc characters and whole hordes: full names such as Gruzhak Skullsplitter and Morgha Redhand, names with a clan such as Thrukk of the Red Fang, orc clan names alone, titles such as Warchief Urzog Nine-Scars, and warbands such as the Bloody Tusk. Choose female, male or either and generate up to a hundred at once.

Orc names in fantasy are made to be shouted. They are built from hard consonants, g, k, z, r and the guttural gh and zh, in one or two syllables, Thrukk, Gruzhak, Morgha, with an earned epithet in plain English attached to the front name, Skullsplitter, Ironjaw, Nine-Scars. The epithet is the orc equivalent of a surname: it is not inherited, it is taken, and an orc whose name has none has not done anything yet. This generator gives both halves, and the clan and warband structure the epithet fits into.

Full name gives the guttural name with an epithet, or occasionally alone, for the young orc. Name with clan attaches a clan of the adjective-noun kind orcs use, the Red Fang, the Broken Skull, the Howling Wolf, since orc society is built on the clan and a warrior is introduced by it. Clan name gives the clan alone, sometimes with the territory it holds, the Tusk of the Ashmark. Name with title puts a rank in front, Warchief, Shaman, Bloodseer, Warmother, or gives the scar-count form, Urzog Nine-Scars, that orcs use for a veteran. Warband name gives the raiding group, either a clan-style name, a leader's possessive, Gruzhak's Reavers, or a band tied to a place, the Marauders of the Grey Moors.

The gender option splits the first-name list. Female orc names here use the same hard palette with a few softer endings, -a and -ha, Morgha, Ushka, Grishka, so a female orc sounds like an orc and not like an elf who wandered in; Warmother sits in the title list beside Warchief. Epithets, clans and warbands are shared, since an orc earns them regardless.

The places the clans hold are the shared map of this section, the Ashmark, the Grey Moors, the Northern Marches, Cairnhold, so an orc horde generated here threatens the same kingdoms the fantasy kingdom page named. The main lists are original; the D&D kinds are covered below. Orc naming across games draws on one small guttural palette, so a name here may coincide with one in some published setting; none is copied, and a name intended for commercial use should be searched first.

For the half-orc who left the clan, the half-orc page; for the goblins the orcs push around, the goblin page; for the orc's weapon, the weapon page; and for the fortress the warband holds, the castle page.

D&D names from the orc name generator

Orcs in D&D have long been villains, but newer rules and settings like Eberron treat them as a full people with their own cultures, and many players now make orc heroes. Orc given names stay short and punchy, one or two syllables with hard consonants, and are the same whether the orc is a raider or a druid. What changes is what comes after. A tribe name, built from an animal, a colour, a weapon or an omen, says where the orc comes from. An epithet, earned in battle or by some habit, says what the orc is known for. The generator gives you both.

    Orcs as heroes

If your orc is a hero, lean on the D&D Name with epithet kind and pick a thoughtful epithet like the Patient or the Wise. It surprises people who expect a brute, and it gives the character a history to explain.

    FAQ

Why do orc names have epithets instead of surnames?

Because orc culture in most settings is meritocratic and violent: a name is earned, not inherited. Skullsplitter tells you what the orc did; Nine-Scars tells you how many times he nearly died doing it. Give the epithet to the veteran and leave the young orc with the bare name until the story gives him one.

What do female orc names sound like?

Like orc names. The female list keeps the same hard consonants and adds a few open endings, Morgha, Ushka, Vorka, so the name is still one to shout across a battlefield. The title list includes Warmother and Bloodseer for the roles female orcs hold in many settings.

How do I build an orc horde?

Generate a warband name first, then a name with title for its warchief and shaman, then a batch of names with clan for the warriors. The clan and the warband will often be the same name, which is right: a horde is a clan on the march.

Do the clans fit the rest of the fantasy section?

Yes. The territories the clans hold, the Ashmark, the Grey Moors, the Northern Marches, are the shared map the kingdom, city and map label pages use, so an orc clan generated here can sit on the border of a kingdom already named.

How are D&D orc names different from generic fantasy orcs?

They are similar in sound, harsh and short, but D&D gives orcs a stronger tribal identity and, in newer material, more varied cultures. That is why the generator includes tribe names and a wider range of epithets, from warlike ones to thoughtful ones. The other kinds on this page are more brutal.

What makes a good orc tribe name?

Orc tribe names are usually an image: a broken tusk, a bloody moon, a burning eye. They name a totem, an omen or a famous event. A good tribe name is easy to shout, looks good on a banner, and hints at how the tribe fights or what it worships.

Can I use these for half-orcs?

Yes. A half-orc raised among orcs would have an orc name, and many half-orcs keep one even when living among humans. The half-orc page in the fantasy section also mixes in human names for half-orcs raised in human towns, if you want that option.

    Do orcs have family names?

Most orcs identify by tribe rather than by family, so the tribe name does the job a surname would. An orc living outside its tribe may take a human surname or keep the tribe name, as in "of the Red Fang", which the D&D Character name kind sometimes adds.

Are any of these names from published works?

The main lists are original. The D&D kinds follow the fifth edition rules and include names from the rulebooks' published example lists. Orc naming in games and fiction shares a small guttural palette and a stock of violent epithets, so a coincidental match with a published name is possible, and a name meant for commercial use should be searched first.
