How the Image Splitter works

This image splitter cuts one photo into a grid of tiles so it can be posted as a giant mosaic on an Instagram profile or swiped through as a seamless carousel. Pick a grid, check the lines on the preview and download every tile in a single zip.

How the image splitter works

Drop in a photo and choose a grid. 3 × 1 makes a panorama of three tiles for a carousel or one row of a profile; 3 × 3 fills three full rows of a profile grid. Custom uses the two sliders for any layout up to ten by ten. The preview shows the cropped photo with white lines exactly where the cuts will fall, so you can see whether a face or a word is going to be sliced through before you download.

Tile shape and cropping

With Square (1:1) or Portrait (4:5) the tool crops the centre of your photo to the exact aspect the whole grid needs, so every tile comes out the right shape for Instagram without any further editing. Keep proportions uses the whole image and divides it evenly, which suits banners and print layouts where the tile shape does not matter. Tiles are cut at full resolution with no resampling.

Posting order

Instagram shows the newest post at the top left, so a grid has to be posted backwards, starting with the bottom-right tile. Files in the zip are numbered in that order — post-1 is the bottom-right tile — and each name also carries its row and column. Upload them from the lowest number to the highest and the picture assembles itself on your profile. For a carousel, select the tiles in reverse number order, or just by column, left to right.

Formats

PNG sources produce PNG tiles. Everything else, including JPG, HEIC and WebP, produces high-quality JPG tiles, which every social platform accepts.

Private by design

The photo is split entirely in your browser and is never uploaded. The zip is assembled locally too.

FAQ

What order should I post the tiles in?

Post them in file-number order, starting with post-1, which is the bottom-right tile. Instagram puts the newest post first, so posting backwards makes the full picture appear the right way round.

How do I make a seamless carousel panorama?

Choose 3 × 1 with Square or Portrait tiles, then add the tiles to a single carousel post from left to right. Each swipe moves exactly one tile, so the panorama scrolls continuously.

Why was part of my photo cropped off?

Square and portrait tiles need the whole grid to have a fixed shape, so the centre is cropped to fit. Choose Keep proportions to use the full photo, at the cost of tiles that are not square.

Can I split an image into more than nine pieces?

Yes. Choose Custom and set the column and row sliders, up to ten of each. All tiles are numbered in posting order and packed into the same zip download.
