How the Doodle Pad works

This doodle pad online gives you four brushes and a canvas. A drawing pad for the moments when you just want to draw something: a quick sketch to explain an idea, a doodle while you think, a card for someone, a drawing with a child. Pick a colour and a brush, scribble with a mouse, finger or stylus, undo what you did not mean, and download the result as a PNG or an SVG. There is no account, no toolbar to learn and no upload.

Pen draws a clean line at the size you set. Marker is wider and flat, good for filling shapes and for bold lettering. Rainbow cycles through the hue wheel as the stroke travels, so a long curl comes out as a full spectrum; the colour setting is ignored while it is selected. Calligraphy varies the width with the direction of travel like a broad-edged nib held at forty-five degrees: diagonal strokes from top left to bottom right are thin, and strokes at right angles to that are thick, which gives italic lettering and swashes their characteristic shape. Draw slowly with Calligraphy for the most even result.

Colours and paper

The ten ink colours are chosen to stay readable on every paper; White ink is there for drawing on Black paper, and the pastel papers (Sky blue, Mint, Pink) suit soft sketches and cards. Because the paper is a background layer, you can change it after drawing and the doodle simply moves to the new colour. The paper colour is baked into both downloads, so if you want a transparent doodle use the signature pad, which exports without a background.

Undo, clear and reset

Undo removes the last complete stroke and can be pressed repeatedly to walk back through the drawing. Clear wipes the pad but leaves your brush, colour and paper as they are. Reset puts the settings back to their defaults without touching the drawing, so you can return to a black pen without losing what you have drawn.

Saving the doodle

Download PNG renders the pad at twice its on-screen size, paper included, which is the format to use for messaging apps, social posts and documents. Download SVG writes the paper as a rectangle and each stroke as a path; a rainbow stroke becomes a run of short coloured paths, and a calligraphy stroke a run of paths of varying width. SVGs open in any vector editor and scale to poster size without going blurry.

FAQ

Can I draw with a finger on my phone?

Yes. The pad listens for touch as well as mouse and pen input, and it stops the page from scrolling while your finger is on it so the drag draws rather than moves the page. A stylus works too, and the Pen brush ignores pressure so lines stay a consistent width.

Why does the rainbow brush ignore my colour choice?

Because it generates its own colour for every point along the stroke, stepping around the hue wheel by six degrees each time. A stroke of sixty points covers the whole spectrum. Switch back to Pen, Marker or Calligraphy to use the colour you picked.

Is there a fill or shape tool?

No. This is a freehand pad, kept deliberately simple so it opens fast and works on any device. For filled shapes use the wide Marker brush and colour in by hand, or download the SVG and finish the drawing in a vector editor, where each stroke is a separate editable path.

Where are my doodles stored?

Only in the page. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is written to disk until you press a download button, and reloading the page clears the pad. Download anything you want to keep before closing the tab.
