How the Signature Pad works

This signature pad online saves your signature as a PNG. Sign in the box with a mouse, a finger on a touch screen or a stylus, then download the signature as a PNG with a transparent background, ready to drop onto a PDF, a Word document or an email footer, or as an SVG that stays sharp at any size. The pen thins on fast strokes and thickens on slow ones so the result looks like real ink, and Undo removes the last stroke if your hand slipped. The signature never leaves your browser.

Signature pad online: drawing a good signature

The pad is three times wider than it is tall, the same shape as a signature line on a form, so sign across the middle at the size you would on paper rather than filling the box. A stylus gives the most natural result; a finger on a phone or tablet is next best; a mouse is workable if you sign slowly and keep the pen thickness at three or above. If a stroke goes wrong, Undo removes just that stroke, and Clear starts again without touching your settings.

Pressure-style and fixed pens

In Pressure-style mode the line width follows how you sign. On a stylus that reports pressure the width follows the pressure directly, between roughly forty percent and one hundred and sixty percent of the Pen thickness. On a mouse or finger there is no pressure to read, so the pad uses speed instead: quick flicks come out thin and slow, deliberate curves come out thick, which is how a fountain pen or a felt tip behaves on paper. Successive widths are smoothed so the line does not jitter. Fixed mode draws every point at the same width, which suits a marker-pen look or a signature that will be scaled down very small.

Transparent PNG or SVG

The PNG download is rendered at twice the on-screen size with a transparent background unless you pick White. A transparent signature can be placed over a scanned form or a letterhead without a white box around it; PDF editors, Word, Pages, Google Docs and most email clients accept it directly. The SVG download writes each stroke as a vector path with round caps and joins, so it can be scaled to any size, recoloured in Inkscape or Illustrator, or embedded in a web page at a few kilobytes. Because the strokes are stored as coordinates rather than pixels, the SVG is an exact record of what you drew.

Where the signature goes

Nowhere. The pad runs entirely in the page: the strokes are kept in memory, the PNG and SVG are assembled in your browser and the download is served from a local blob. Close the tab and the signature is gone, so the pad is safe to use for contracts, consent forms and anything else you would rather not upload to a signature service.

FAQ

Is a drawn signature legally valid?

In most jurisdictions an electronic signature, including a drawn image of one, is accepted for ordinary contracts and forms under laws such as ESIGN and eIDAS, provided both parties intend to sign. Some documents, such as wills and certain property deeds, still require a wet signature or a witnessed one, so check the rules for your document type.

How do I put the signature on a PDF?

Download the transparent PNG, open the PDF in a viewer that supports image stamps, such as Preview on a Mac, Adobe Acrobat Reader, or the built-in editor in Chrome or Edge, and insert the PNG on the signature line. Because the background is transparent it sits cleanly on top of the form lines without hiding them.

Why does the line look thinner on the download than on screen?

It is not thinner; it is rendered at twice the pixel size, so the same stroke covers a larger image. When you paste it into a document at its natural size it will look exactly as it did on screen. Increase the Pen thickness before downloading if you want a heavier line.

Can I sign with an Apple Pencil or a Surface Pen?

Yes. The pad reads the pressure those pens report and varies the line width with it, which gives the most natural result. On a pen without pressure, or with a mouse or finger, the width follows your speed instead, so the signature still looks hand-drawn rather than traced.
