How the GIF Cropper works

This GIF cropper trims the edges off an animated GIF and keeps every frame moving with its original timing. Set how much to cut from each side, watch the preview update and download the cropped GIF.

How to use the GIF cropper

Drop in an animated GIF, then move the four sliders to trim a percentage from the left, right, top and bottom. The preview plays the cropped animation straight away, and the panel shows the new size, frame count and file size before you download.

Why percentages

Trimming by percentage means the same settings work on any GIF, whatever its pixel size. Each side can lose up to 45%, so there is always a strip of the picture left in the middle.

Frames and timing are kept

Every frame is fully composited before cropping, so GIFs that only redraw the part of the picture that changes still crop cleanly. Each frame keeps its own delay and the loop setting of the original is kept.

What changes in the output

The cropped GIF is re-encoded with one shared 256-colour palette, and transparent areas are filled with white. Cropping also shrinks the file, because fewer pixels are stored in every frame.

FAQ

How do I crop an animated GIF without losing the animation?

Drop the GIF in and set the trim sliders for each edge. Every frame is cropped the same way and keeps its delay, so the downloaded GIF plays exactly like the original, just with the edges removed.

Can I crop a GIF to a square?

Yes. Trim the longer sides more than the shorter ones until the Output line in the panel shows equal width and height. For example, a 400 × 300 GIF needs 12.5% off the left and right.

Does cropping make the GIF file smaller?

Usually, yes. Every frame stores fewer pixels after cropping, so the file shrinks roughly in line with the area you remove. Use the GIF resizer as well if you need it smaller still.

Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?

No. The GIF is decoded, cropped and re-encoded entirely inside your browser, so the file never leaves your device and the tool keeps working even if you go offline after the page loads.
