How the GIF Resizer works
This GIF resizer scales an animated GIF to a new size while keeping every frame moving, and can change its playback speed, reverse it or make it bounce back and forth. Drop in a GIF, adjust the settings and download the edited animation.
How to use the GIF resizer
Drop in an animated GIF and the preview plays the edited version straight away. Size scales both dimensions by the same percentage, so the shape never distorts. Speed multiplies the playback rate of every frame, Direction chooses forwards, reverse or ping-pong, and the panel shows the new dimensions, frame count, length and file size before you download.
Making a GIF smaller
Halving the width and height cuts the pixels to a quarter, which is usually the quickest way to get a GIF under a chat app's or forum's upload limit. Every frame is fully composited before scaling, so GIFs that only redraw the part of the picture that changes are handled correctly.
Changing the speed
Each frame keeps its own delay, multiplied by the speed you choose, so uneven timing in the original survives. Browsers will not show a frame for less than 20 ms; if speeding up would go below that, the frame is held at 20 ms and a note tells you the GIF cannot get any faster. To speed it further, drop frames with the GIF frame extractor and rebuild it.
Reverse and ping-pong
Reverse plays the frames backwards. Ping-pong plays forwards then backwards without repeating the end frames, giving a seamless bounce that suits short loops.
What changes in the output
The edited GIF is re-encoded with one shared 256-colour palette, and any transparent areas are filled with white. The loop setting of the original is kept. Nothing is uploaded at any point.
FAQ
How do I resize a GIF without losing the animation?
Drop the GIF in, set the Size slider to the percentage you want and download. Every frame is scaled the same way and the timing is kept, so the animation plays exactly as before at its new size.
How do I make a GIF smaller in file size?
Reduce its dimensions. At 50% the GIF has a quarter of the pixels, which normally shrinks the file a lot. Speeding it up does not reduce size, because the same number of frames is still stored.
Can I slow down a GIF?
Yes. Choose 0.5× or 0.25× under Speed. Every frame stays on screen two or four times longer, so the whole animation plays more slowly while keeping the relative timing between its frames.
Why does my transparent GIF now have a white background?
The re-encoded GIF uses a single shared colour palette without a transparent colour, so see-through areas are filled with white. Keep the original file if you need the transparency.
