How the Jigsaw Puzzle Maker works

This jigsaw puzzle maker draws classic interlocking piece outlines over your photo so you can print it on card and cut out a real puzzle, or share the outlined image as a puzzle-style graphic for a birthday, classroom or announcement.

How to use the jigsaw puzzle maker

Choose a photo and set the number of Columns and Rows. The tool joins every piece to its neighbours with the familiar knob-and-hole tabs, choosing at random which way each tab points. Change the Layout seed for a different arrangement with the same grid.

Choosing the number of pieces

Six by four gives 24 large pieces, ideal for young children. Ten by seven gives 70, and twenty by fifteen gives 300 small pieces for adults. Match the grid to the photo's shape so pieces come out close to square.

Printing and cutting

Print on thick photo paper or glue the print to card. White lines show clearly on most photos; switch to black or a bright colour for snowy or pale pictures. Cut along the lines with a craft knife on a cutting mat, taking the tabs slowly.

Private by design

The outlines are drawn on a canvas in your browser, and the photo is never uploaded.

FAQ

How many pieces should a puzzle for a child have?

Toddlers manage 6 to 12 large pieces, children of four or five enjoy around 24 to 48, and older children can tackle 100 or more. Fewer, larger pieces are also easier to cut neatly by hand.

Can I get the pieces as separate image files?

This tool draws the cutting lines on the photo for printing. If you need square tiles as separate files, for example for a digital sliding puzzle, use the image splitter tool to cut the photo into a grid.

Why is the output a PNG?

Thin coloured lines stay crisp in PNG format, which matters when the image is printed and cut. JPG compression can blur fine lines and leave faint halos around them.

How do I get the same layout again?

The tab directions come from the layout seed. Use the same photo, grid and seed number and the tool draws exactly the same pieces again, which is useful for printing a spare copy.
