How the Meme Maker works
This meme maker adds top and bottom text to any picture. Press Add image, or drop a picture on the canvas, and the canvas takes on the photo's shape. Type the top and bottom captions in the side panel — they update as you type in the white Impact lettering with a black outline that memes have used since the image-macro days. Drag a caption to move it, pull a corner to resize it, or double-click to edit it in place; the Selected item panel changes font, colour and outline if you want something other than Impact. Add text puts an extra caption anywhere. Download PNG keeps the full resolution of the original picture; JPEG is smaller for posting.
Meme maker: what to know first
The format is older than most of the people using it: white capitals in Impact, with a black stroke so the letters stay legible over any picture, one line at the top and one at the bottom of a photograph. It is called an image macro, and it has survived a dozen waves of meme fashion because it is fast to read and fast to make. This page makes one with no watermark, no sign-in and nothing uploaded — the picture stays in your browser tab and the finished meme is generated there too.
Why the text looks like that. Impact is a heavy condensed typeface that ships with Windows and macOS, which is why it became the default: every meme generator could count on it being installed. The outline is painted first and the white fill on top, so the stroke never eats into the letter shapes however thick you make it. The text size slider is a percentage of the image width rather than a point size, so a caption that fits a small picture fits a large one too, and the outline scales with it.
Captions wrap. Each caption is a text box 94% of the image width, so a long line breaks onto a second and a third rather than running off the edge. If you would rather it did not wrap, drag the box wider or shrink the text. The bottom caption is anchored to its own bottom edge, so it grows upwards as lines are added and never falls off the picture.
Resolution. The canvas is set to the size of the picture you add, capped at 1600 pixels wide, and the download is at that size rather than the size shown on screen. A meme made from a 4000-pixel photograph comes out at 1600 pixels, which is plenty for any social feed and keeps the file from being enormous.
More than two captions. Add text drops a third caption in the middle of the picture, in the same Impact style, and you can add as many as you like. Box, Circle and Arrow are there for the "look at this" style of meme; Delete and Undo behave as you would expect. Reset returns to the blank canvas.
Privacy. The picture is read by your browser from your disk and drawn onto a canvas element. It is never sent to a server, and neither is the finished image: Download builds the PNG or JPEG locally and saves it.
FAQ
Why does the download have no watermark?
Because there is no reason for one. The page runs entirely in your browser and there is no service to promote by stamping its name on your image. What you make is yours.
Can I use a different font?
Yes. Click a caption and the Selected item panel appears with a font list — Arial Black, Comic Sans, Georgia and others — plus colour, outline and size controls. Impact is the default because it is what people expect a meme to look like.
Can I make a meme without a picture?
Yes. The blank canvas is a dark 800 by 800 square, and the captions work on it as they would on a photo. Change the canvas colour by adding a Box, sizing it to fill the picture, sending it to the back and setting its fill.
What formats can I add?
Anything your browser can display: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame only), BMP and SVG. Animated GIFs are not preserved; the output is always a still PNG or JPEG.
Is the image uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is opened locally by the page, the meme is composed on a canvas in the tab, and the download is generated there as well. Nothing is transmitted.
