How the OBJ Viewer works
This OBJ viewer online loads models with their materials. OBJ is the plain-text 3D format that nearly every modelling program can write, with its materials in a separate MTL file and the textures as ordinary images alongside. Drop the whole set on this page and the model appears in an orbit viewport with its materials applied, ready for wireframe and lighting checks and a PNG export. Files never leave your browser.
OBJ viewer online: loading an OBJ with its materials
Select the .obj, its .mtl and every texture image together and drop them on the page, or click
the drop zone and shift-click the files in the picker. The page reads the mtllib line inside
the .obj to find the right material file, then resolves each map_Kd and similar texture
reference by filename against the files you dropped, so it does not matter which folder they
came from as long as the names match. An .obj dropped on its own loads with a neutral grey
material, which is often all you need to check the geometry.
Once loaded, orbit with the left mouse button, zoom with the wheel and pan with the right button. Fit view frames the whole model again after you have wandered off, and Reset returns the page to its sample shape.
Y up or Z up
OBJ files carry no information about which axis points upward. Blender, 3ds Max and most CAD packages treat Z as up, while Maya, Unity and the web treat Y as up, so a model exported from one and opened in the other appears lying on its back. The Up axis menu rotates the model by ninety degrees around X to correct this; the file itself is never changed. If the model looks right with Y up, leave it; if it is on its side, switch to Z up.
Shading and lighting
Shading draws the model with its MTL materials, as a wireframe, as a solid with the wireframe laid over it or coloured by surface normal. The normal view is the quickest way to find faces that point inward, a common OBJ export problem that shows up as holes in other viewers. Because OBJ materials are the old Phong model rather than physically based, the page converts them to a standard material for the studio and soft lighting; Unlit shows the diffuse texture flat with no lighting, which is the truest view of what is actually in the texture files.
Statistics and export
After loading, the rail shows the file size, mesh count (one per o or g group in the file),
triangle and vertex counts, the bounding box and the number of materials and textures. OBJ has
no unit, so the size is in whatever the exporter used. Download PNG renders the current view at
preview, retina or 4K width with the chosen background, using your own graphics card.
FAQ
Why does my OBJ load without colours or textures?
Either the .mtl file or the texture images were not dropped with it. Select all three kinds of file at once. If the .mtl is present but the textures are missing, the model shows the material colours only; if the .mtl is missing too, everything is grey. Check that the filenames inside the .mtl match the image files exactly, including extension.
Why is my model lying on its side?
The exporter used Z as the up axis and this viewer, like most web tools, uses Y. Switch the Up axis menu to Z up and the model stands upright. Nothing in the file is altered; if you need the file itself fixed, re-export with a Y-up option or rotate it in your modelling tool.
How big a file can it open?
There is no upload limit because there is no upload; the limit is memory and graphics power on your machine. Text OBJ files are bulky, so a file of a few hundred megabytes with several million triangles will take a while to parse and may be sluggish to orbit on a laptop. Decimate large scans in your modelling tool first.
Can I convert the OBJ to another format here?
Not on this page; it is a viewer only. Most modelling tools, including the free Blender, import OBJ and export glTF, STL or FBX. Once converted you can check the result in the matching viewer here to make sure the materials and orientation came through.
