How the Seamless Texture Maker works

This seamless texture maker turns a photo of grass, stone, fabric or wood into a texture that tiles without visible edges. Drop the image, set how wide a band is blended at each edge, check the old seams, and preview the result repeated on a plane before downloading the tileable PNG. The image is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Seamless texture maker: why photos do not tile

A photo's left edge has nothing to do with its right edge, so when it is repeated across a floor or wall a hard line appears at every join. Game engines, 3D programs, website backgrounds and fabric printing all repeat textures, so the edges must match. A seamless texture is one where the right edge flows into the left and the bottom into the top.

How the blending works

The page builds the texture from the image and a copy shifted by half its width and height. In the shifted copy, the original edges meet in the middle and the new outer edges, taken from the middle of the photo, already wrap perfectly. Near the outer edges the result uses the shifted copy; towards the centre it fades smoothly back to the original. The blend band sets how far in from each edge that fade reaches. A narrow band keeps more of the original photo; a wide band hides stronger seams but can look softer or doubled.

Checking the result

Show seams moves the result by half so the edges you cannot see in Normal view sit in the middle of the image, where any join would be obvious. Raise Preview tiles to see the texture repeated two, three or four times on the plane: repeated features, such as one bright stone, stand out more than seams, and are a sign to try a different photo or crop.

Getting good source images

Shoot evenly lit surfaces straight on, without shadows or a strong gradient from one side to the other; lighting changes cannot be blended away. Square images work best. For game materials, make the tileable colour texture here, then derive the other maps from it with the normal map generator and the roughness and AO map generator.

FAQ

Does the download include the seams view?

No. Download tileable PNG always saves the Normal result, ready to repeat, whichever view is on screen. Show seams is only for checking the joins by eye.

Why does the texture look blurry in places?

Where the blend band crosses busy detail, two different parts of the photo are mixed, which can look soft or ghosted. Narrow the blend band, or use a photo with smaller, more even detail such as gravel or sand.

What size is the downloaded PNG?

The same width and height as the image you dropped. Square, power-of-two sizes such as 1024 or 2048 pixels suit game engines best, so crop the photo to that before dropping it in.
