How the Stipple Art Generator works
This stipple art generator turns a photo into a pen-and-ink style drawing made entirely of dots. Dark areas fill with dense clusters and light areas stay open, the same technique illustrators use for scientific drawings and newspaper portraits.
How the stipple art generator works
The tool picks random positions across the image and keeps each dot with a probability based on how dark the photo is there, so shadows collect far more dots than highlights. Dots in dark areas are also drawn slightly larger, which deepens the blacks.
Dots and dot size
Number of dots controls detail. Around 10,000 suits a simple portrait; 30,000 or more brings out texture in hair and fabric. Dot size sets the pen width. Small dots in large numbers look delicate, while fewer large dots look bold and graphic.
Colours and printing
Change Ink and Paper for white dots on black, sepia ink on cream or brand colours. The PNG output has crisp dots that print well, and it makes a good starting point for pen plotters or laser engraving.
Private by design
Every dot is placed in your browser, and the photo is never uploaded.
FAQ
What is stippling?
Stippling is a drawing method where tone comes from many small dots rather than lines or shading. The closer the dots, the darker the area looks. It is common in botanical, technical and portrait illustration.
Which photos work best?
Photos with clear contrast and a simple background give the cleanest stipple art. Brighten or crop busy backgrounds first, and use the black and white photo tool to boost contrast if the subject looks flat.
How is this different from halftone?
Halftone uses a regular grid of dots that change size. Stippling scatters dots of similar size at random and varies how many there are, which looks hand-drawn rather than printed.
Why does the same seed give the same drawing?
Dot positions come from a seeded random number generator. Keeping the seed and settings fixed repeats the exact drawing, while changing the seed gives a fresh arrangement with the same overall tone.
