How the Video Fade works
Add a video fade in and out without an editor. Drop in a clip, set how long the picture should take to appear from black or white and how long it should take to disappear at the end, press Render and download. The sound can fade with the picture. Nothing is uploaded.
Video fade in and out: a softer start and finish
A hard cut from nothing straight into the first frame feels abrupt, and a clip that stops dead feels unfinished. A short fade fixes both. Film and television have used the fade to black to mark the start and end of a scene for over a century, so viewers read it as "this is the beginning" and "this is the end" without thinking about it.
How long should a fade be?
Half a second to one second suits a fade in on social clips, where people scroll past if nothing appears quickly. One to two seconds is typical for a fade out. Three seconds or more reads as deliberate and slow, which suits the end of a wedding film or a memorial video. Set either length to 0 to skip it.
Black or white
Fade to black is the default and the safe choice. Fade to white feels brighter and dreamier and is often used for flashbacks, weddings and upbeat endings.
Sound
With "Fade the sound too" the volume rises and falls with the picture, so music and voices do not cut in or out abruptly. For audio files alone, use the audio fade in and out tool. Rendering plays the clip once in real time. The result is WebM in Chrome, Edge and Firefox and MP4 in Safari.
FAQ
Can I fade only the end of a video?
Yes. Set the fade in to 0 and choose a fade out length. The first frame then appears straight away and only the ending fades, which is the most common choice for clips that already start cleanly.
What happens if the fades are longer than the clip?
They overlap in the middle and the picture never reaches full brightness. Keep the fade in and fade out together shorter than the clip, ideally well under half of its length.
Can I fade between two clips?
This tool fades the start and end of one clip. For a dip to black between clips, fade each clip here and then join them with the video merger, which plays them back to back.
