How the Video Mirror Player works

This video mirror player plays any clip flipped left to right, so a dance teacher's right arm moves on your right as you follow along. Choose a view, slow it down if you need, and scrub with the Position slider. The video is played in your browser and the file is never changed or uploaded.

Most dance, fitness and yoga videos are filmed facing the camera. When the instructor raises their right arm, it appears on the left of your screen, so you either copy the wrong side or mirror it in your head while also learning the move. Studios have a wall of mirrors for exactly this reason.

How the video mirror player works

The video is shown with a CSS transform: a horizontal scale of −1 for Mirror, a vertical scale of −1 for Upside down, or both. The browser flips the picture as it draws it, so there is no rendering and no quality loss. The normal player controls are hidden because they would be flipped too, so the tool provides its own buttons and a Position slider.

View Looks like Use it for
Mirror (left-right) A studio mirror Dance, aerobics, yoga, martial arts
Upside down Turned over top to bottom Footage from a camera mounted upside down
Both Rotated 180° A clip shot with the phone upside down
Normal The original Comparing with the mirrored view

Practising with a mirrored video

Start at 0.75 or 0.5 speed until the sequence is in your body, then go to full speed. Use Back 5 s to repeat a combination, or the video A-B loop for a longer phrase. Clicking the video itself also plays or pauses it, which is handy when you are standing back from the screen.

Tips and pitfalls

Text reads backwards. Mirroring flips any on-screen words, such as the instructor's count captions. That is expected and does not affect your file.

Want a mirrored file? This player only changes the view. To save a flipped copy that plays mirrored everywhere, use the video rotator and choose Flip horizontally.

Snapshots keep the flip. Snapshot saves the current frame as a PNG exactly as you see it, mirrored or upside down, at the video's full resolution.

How to read the result

The stats show the playback position and length, the current view, the speed and the video's resolution. The Position slider also shows the time as you drag it.

FAQ

How do I mirror a video so I can follow along?

Load the video and keep View on "Mirror (left-right)". Press Play / Pause or click the picture. The instructor's movements now appear on the same side as yours, like looking at a studio mirror while you dance or exercise.

Does this change my video file?

No. The flip is only applied while the video plays on this page, and the file on your device stays exactly as it was. To make a permanently mirrored copy, use the video rotator's flip option instead.

Can I slow the mirrored video down?

Yes. Choose 0.5 or 0.75 speed. The sound keeps its normal pitch so music stays in tune, which helps you keep counting the beat while you learn a routine slowly, section by section.

Is my video uploaded to flip it?

No. The browser plays and flips the video on your own device, and snapshots are made there too. Nothing is sent to a server, so personal recordings and paid course videos stay private.
