How the Video Volume Changer works
This video volume changer makes a clip louder or quieter. Drop in a video, set the volume as a percentage, where 100% is unchanged, press Render and download. A limiter stops loud parts from crackling when you boost. The picture is kept as it is and nothing is uploaded.
Video volume changer: percent and decibels
The volume slider multiplies the sound. 200% doubles the signal, which is about 6 decibels louder; 50% halves it, about 6 decibels quieter. The results panel shows the change in decibels too. Hearing does not scale the same way: most people judge a sound "twice as loud" at around 10 decibels, which is roughly 300%.
Why boosting needs a limiter
Digital audio has a ceiling. When a boost pushes peaks past it, the waveform is cut flat and you hear crackle, called clipping. With the limiter on, loud moments above about −3 dB are pulled down smoothly while quiet speech is still raised. Leave it on unless the clip is already very quiet throughout.
Typical uses
Phone recordings of talks and meetings are often too quiet, especially when the speaker is far from the microphone. Screen recordings with system sound can be far louder than the narration around them. Lowering a clip to 50–70% before merging it with others keeps the levels even.
For audio files alone, use the audio volume changer. To silence a clip completely, mute video is quicker. Rendering plays the clip once in real time. The output is WebM in Chrome, Edge and Firefox and MP4 in Safari.
FAQ
How much louder can I make a video?
Up to 400%, about 12 decibels. Beyond that, background noise rises along with speech and the result sounds harsh. If the clip is still too quiet at 400%, the recording itself is likely too far below usable level.
Will boosting the volume make background noise louder?
Yes. Volume raises everything in the sound, including hum, wind and room noise. A noise reduction tool can clean the audio before boosting, but this page changes the level only.
Does changing the volume affect the picture?
The picture is not edited, but the whole video is re-recorded in the browser, so it is encoded again. Quality stays close to the original for most clips.
