How the Watercolour Effect works
This watercolour effect turns a photo into a painting with soft colour washes, darker pigment pooling at the edges and the grain of textured paper. It suits portraits, pets, travel photos and wedding stationery.
How the watercolour effect works
The tool flattens areas of similar colour into smooth washes while keeping the boundaries between them, much like paint settling on paper. It then darkens the edges of each wash, where real watercolour pigment dries thicker, and adds a gentle paper grain.
Softness, edges and paper
Wash softness sets how much detail is painted out. Low values keep texture; high values give loose, simplified shapes. Pigment edges controls the dark rims around washes, and Paper texture adds the bumpy cold-press look. Turn paper to zero for a smooth digital painting.
Best photos to use
Bright, well-lit photos with clear shapes look most like paintings. Landscapes, flowers and buildings convert especially well. Very dark photos lose detail, so brighten them first.

FAQ
Is this a real watercolour simulation?
It is a fast image filter rather than a physical paint simulation. It reproduces the key visual traits of watercolour, flat washes, darker edges and paper grain, in a second or two in your browser.
Can I print the result?
Yes. Printing on textured art paper or watercolour card adds to the effect. For the sharpest print, start from a large photo, since the output keeps the original size up to 2,000 pixels.
Why do faces look blotchy at high softness?
High softness merges fine tonal changes, which can flatten skin into patches. For portraits keep softness around 3 to 5 so eyes and mouths stay clear.
How is this different from the oil painting effect?
Oil painting gives thick, opaque brush-stroke texture with rich colour. Watercolour keeps colours lighter and translucent, with soft washes, dark rims and visible paper, so the two styles look quite different.
