How the Dividend Calculator works

This dividend calculator shows what a share or fund pays you. Enter the amount invested, the share price and the yearly dividend per share to get the yield, the income per year and per payment, and project the income over years with optional dividend growth and reinvestment.

Dividend calculator formula

The yield compares the yearly dividend with the price. The dividend calculator uses:

Yield = annual dividend per share ÷ share price

Annual income = shares × annual dividend per share

With reinvestment, each payment buys more shares at the current price, so the next payment is larger. The price is held constant here so the effect of reinvesting is clear; real prices move.

Worked example: plain income

10,000 in a share at 50.00 paying 2.00 a year buys 200 shares. The yield is 4%, the income is 400.00 a year or 100.00 a quarter, and over 10 years with no growth you collect 4,000.00.

Worked example: growth and reinvestment

Add 5% yearly dividend growth and reinvest every payment. Year 1 pays 406.04 and year 10 pays 984.52. Total dividends reach 6,485.85 and you end with 329.72 shares worth 16,485.85. The table shows how many dollars or pounds each yield pays per payment.

Quick answers

FAQ

What is a good dividend yield?

Broad stock markets have typically yielded a few percent. A yield well above the market can signal that investors expect the dividend to be cut, so a high number is worth checking against the company's earnings and history.

Is dividend yield based on the price I paid?

The quoted yield uses today's price. Yield on cost uses the price you paid, which rises over time if the dividend grows. Enter your purchase price to see your yield on cost.

Does this include tax on dividends?

No. Dividend tax depends on your country, account type and income. The figures here are before tax. If you know your own rate, reduce the dividend per share by that percentage to see the net income.

What is a DRIP?

A dividend reinvestment plan automatically uses each dividend to buy more shares, often with no dealing fee. Set reinvest to Yes to model it. Over long periods it can make a large difference to both income and value.
