How the Stock Profit Calculator works
This stock profit calculator works out what you made or lost on a trade. Enter the number of shares, the buy and sell prices and any dealing fees to get the profit or loss, the percentage return on the money you put in and the price you need to sell at to break even.
Stock profit calculator formula
The cost is what you paid including the buying fee, and the proceeds are what you received less the selling fee. The stock profit calculator uses:
Profit = shares × sell price − selling fee − (shares × buy price + buying fee)
Return = profit ÷ cost × 100
The break-even price is the sell price that makes profit zero: (cost + selling fee) ÷ shares.
Worked example: a gain
Buy 100 shares at 25.00 with a 10.00 fee, costing 2,510.00, and sell at 32.00 with a 10.00 fee, receiving 3,190.00. The profit is 680.00, a return of 27.09%. The break-even sell price was 25.20.
Worked example: a loss
Buy 50 shares at 80.00 and sell at 76.00, with 5.00 fees each way. The cost is 4,005.00 and the proceeds 3,795.00, a loss of 210.00 or −5.24%. The break-even price was 80.20. The table shows how many units of profit each price move gives on 1,000 invested.

Quick answers
- A 10% price rise on 1,000 is a 100 profit before fees.
- A 50% loss needs a 100% gain to get back to even.
- Fees raise the break-even price above the buy price.
- Return is measured on total cost, including the buy fee.
- Dividends received are not included; add them separately.
FAQ
Does this include dividends?
No. It only covers the change in price and the dealing fees. If you received dividends while holding the shares, add them to the profit to get the total return. The dividend calculator can estimate them.
How do I handle shares bought at different prices?
Work out the average cost per share first, by dividing the total paid by the total number of shares, and enter that as the buy price. The dollar cost averaging calculator does this for a list of purchases.
Does this include tax?
No. Tax on share gains depends on your country, account type and how long you held the shares. The profit shown is before tax. The capital gains calculator applies a rate you enter yourself.
What about currency conversion?
If you bought foreign shares, convert both prices into your own currency at the rates on each date and include any conversion fees. Currency moves can add to or reduce the profit made on the shares themselves.
